The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell to Australia Institute tonight in the West Gym, 69-63 to open up the exhibition basketball season. The Panthers led 42-29 at halftime, but behind superb defensive pressure Australia was able to battle back and outscore UNI 40-21 in the second half to secure the victory.
In the first half the Panthers were on fire making nearly every shot they took from the field. UNI fired a sizzling 77.8 percent from behind the arc in the first half, hitting 7-of-9. The Panthers made 14 shots on 28 attempts from the field. Sharpshooter Emily Berry (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the offensive charge hitting 3-of-4 three pointers for nine points while Jessie Biggs (Ottumwa, Iowa) was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field for eight points.
Unfortunately, the second half was a different story. The Panthers shooting cooled to just 14.3 percent from behind the arc (1-7) and 24.1 percent from the field (7-29). Australia shot 50 percent from the field (17-34) and hit one of two three pointers in the second half.
Australia scored 23 points off of 24 UNI turnovers and 18 points off fast breaks. Both benches contributed 22 points with 13 players seeing action for UNI. Eleven players scored for UNI, with Berry leading the way with 15, Biggs adding nine, Alex Cook putting up eight points and 10 rebounds and Cassie Hager and Tara King both scoring seven.
The Panthers exhibition season continues when they host Upper Iowa on Sunday, Nov. 14 in the West Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
