The 575 fans that turned out for tonight's intra-state women's soccer rivalry between UNI and Iowa were treated to an exciting physical match with the Hawkeyes prevailing 3-1. Both teams fed off the energy the record-breaking crowd provided but Iowa's two first half goals proved to be enough to edge UNI.
"This was a very exciting game with a terrific atmosphere," UNI head coach Linda Whitehead said. "The Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Association did an incredible job bringing out the fans and both teams enjoyed playing in this awesome environment."
Three special people were introduced to the crowd before the game started. Senior captain Abby Luensmann was honored in her last home soccer game. Fifth year assistant coach Catherine Broshears will be leaving her coaching post at the conclusion of the season and was recognized for her many contributions to the UNI soccer program, while CVYSA complex manager Tom Hagarty was thanked for his hard work in the partnership with UNI soccer.
In the first period the Hawks controlled the tempo outshooting UNI 12-2. Kelsie Full put Iowa on the scoreboard in the 18th minute off a cross from Jamie Maltman. Full returned the favor feeding Melisa Kaetterhenry in the 35th minute to give the Hawks the 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
At halftime, Waterloo Mayor Tim Hurley and Cedar Falls Mayor Jon Crews shot goals against the Panther mascot (T.C) entertaining the large crowd.
The Panthers came out strong in the second half and cut into the lead when junior forward Abby Luensmann (Dubuque, Iowa) took an indirect kick and Huffer was able to come out of the crowd of defenders to nail the shot past the keeper.
Iowa scored the final goal of the game less than a minute later when Lindsey Phillips made a nice pass to Ashley Schlueter who delivered the goal. UNI and Iowa both fired eight shots in the second half.
Freshman Heidi O'Mara (Stillwater, Minn.) played the full 90 minutes in goal for UNI and made six saves while the Panther defense came away with two saves. Offensively, Kaitlin Stimpson, Luensmann and Huffer each had two shots to lead UNI.
Both teams now have identical records of 2-13-2. The Panthers also found out before the start of the game that they had qualified for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. UNI will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana to take on the Indiana State Sycamores on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers defeated the Sycamores, 1-0 on Oct. 3 at Terre Haute earlier this season.
"We are so excited to have qualified for the tournament," Whitehead said. "We just wanted our shot and now we have it. Indiana State is a very good team but we were able to beat them once this season and we are confident that we will be ready to play and look to advance in the tournament."
