Dr. Elaine Eshbaugh has been the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative to UNI Athletics since July 2015, serving as the liaison between the university and the athletic department. In her role, she ensures that the academic institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics.
A professor of Gerontology and Family Studies, Eshbaugh joined the UNI teaching staff as an associate professor in 2006. In her field, she has researched and taught caregiver knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as depression and mental health across the human lifespan. In addition to over 30 research publications in empirical journals, Eshbaugh helped establish the UNI gerontology department’s Dementia Simulation House, an innovative hands-on learning experience for the UNI campus and community to learn more about individuals with dementia, as well as the experience of living with the disease. Her work has often involved collaboration with various continuing care communities, adult day services and hospice care organizations.
Eshbaugh received her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a family studies minor from UNI in 2000 before earning a master’s degree in human development and family studies from Iowa State University in 2002. She would later he a PhD in human development and family studies at Iowa State in 2005 with a statistics minor, before serving in a post-doctoral research role at the University of Kansas.
Eshbaugh currently resides in Cedar Falls with her husband William, who is also an associate professor of family studies at UNI and serves as the Director of the School of Applied Human Sciences.
