Former UNI guard Cael Schmitt joined the Panther staff in the summer of 2025 as a graduate assistant after playing his final collegiate season at UNI in 2024-25.
A Dubuque, Iowa native and former All-State standout at Wahlert Catholic High School, Schmitt played his first four seasons at Division III Coe College in Cedar Rapids and becoming one of the most efficent players in team history. Schmitt scored 1,518 career points with the Kohawks, second-most in school history while being named First Team All-American Rivers Conference (ARC) all four years, as well as the ARC's Defensive Player of the Year twice.
Schmitt joined the UNI roster for his final season of eligibility in 2024-25 and appeared in 15 games after recovering from an early season injury. He scored 66 points (4.4 per game) in 16.5 minutes a game, plus 12 rebounds, 14 assists and 11 steals in his lone year with the Panthers, who posted a 20-win season and reached the NIT. Schmitt notable scored a season-high 12 points in a home win over Bradley, notched three steals at SMU in the opening round of the NIT, shot 35.5% from the field, including 35.9% from three-point range
