CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The longest road trip of the UNI men's basketball season will tip off on Monday night as the Panthers head to western Kentucky to take on the Murray State Racers in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) action).
Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT at the CFSB Center in Murray with live coverage available on CBS Sports Network and the Panther Sports Radio Network (93.5 The Mix) with J.W. Cox and Kevin Boyle on the call.
UNI holds a narrow 4-2 lead in the all-time series and will look to complete the regular season sweep of the Racers for the first time. The Panthers topped Murray State back on Jan. 24 in Cedar Falls, 81-76.
UNI's defense smothered Bradley on Friday night in a 61-49 win at home, forcing 16 opposing turnovers and scoring 30 points off takeaways. The Panthers also outscored the Braves 30-10 inside the paint.
Ben Schwieger led the Panthers with 15 points in the win over Bradley, while Will Hornseth tallied ten points and new career-highs in rebounds (9) and assists (6). Kyle Pock also notched his first double figure game since December with a ten-point performance as Leon Bond III added eight points.
Northern Iowa leads all of Division I men's basketball in scoring defense with 60 points allowed per game, giving up 70 points just three times this season. The Panthers are 11-2 when holding teams to 60 or fewer points this year. UNI is also second in Division I in three-point percentage defense, limiting opponents to just 26.8% from beyond the arc behind only UT Arlington.
Entering their game against Bradley, the Panthers have held 11 of their last 14 opponents under 30% from three-point range. UNI's scoring defense is currently on pace for the fourth-best mark since transitioning to a Division I program (1980-81). The Panthers have made the NCAA Tournament each of the previous three seasons when giving up 60 points or fewer. The Panthers are also 25th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.398). Ball security has been key for the Panthers this season, averaging a league-low 9.5 turnovers per game, 17th-fewest in Division I men's basketball.
Campbell looks to continue to add to the record book against the Racers. Having scored his 1,000th career point in December, Campbell's 120 career starts at UNI are tied with Ben Jacobson (2002-06) for third-most in program history, and the most among all active players in the MVC. Campbell is also tied for fifth in team history in career steals (157), seventh in three-point field goal attempts (518) and eighth in made three-pointers made (195). With 42 rebounds and 14 more assists, Campbell can also become the first player in UNI history to record 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds and 300 career assists.
Hornseth also looks to continue to be a strong presence inside the paint, recently taking over as UNI's career shooting percentage leader (63.8%) with a minimum of 100 made shots. Bond meanwhile looks to continue his march to 500 points in his UNI career, looking to become the 117th player in team history to reach the milestone.
SCOUTING MURRAY STATE
The Racers return home to the CFSB Center after a high-scoring 91-81 win at Southern Illinois on Friday night. Murray State, which dropped four consecutive games to close out the month of January, sits two games behind Belmont for the top spot in the league standings at 10-4 with six games to play in the regular season.
Led by first year head coach Ryan Miller, the Racers' lead the MVC in scoring offense with 86.3 points per game, while also boasting the league's top bench with 32.6 points scored per game from its bench. Murray State also has attempted an MVC[1]high 27.6 three-point shots per game.
Javon Jackson leads the Racer offense with 16.5 points a game, second-most in the conference, with Roman Domon and Fredrick King both notching 13.7 points per game. King also leads the MVC with 8.9 rebounds a game.
