Northern Iowa, who is playing host to the conference championship meet for the fifth time in the last nine years, was picked fifth in this year's pre-championship coaches poll. Southern Illinois was picked first with four first-place votes, followed by Indiana State in second, with eight-time defending MVC champion Missouri State in third and Little Rock in fourth. Full pre-championship poll results are as follows (total points [first-place votes]:

- 2nd - Indiana State (72) [3]
- 3rd - Missouri State (69) [2]

- 6th - UIC (40)

- 9th - Valparaiso (10)
The Panthers will hit the pool again for the first time since early February when they captured six first-place finishes at the Coyote Invite and put on a strong showing at the Omaha Diving Invite.Â
UNI returns several standout performers from last year's fifth-place team finish at the MVC Championships in Evansville, including two-time defending 50-yard freestyle champion Faith Larsen. Larson, who has won the event in nearly every competition she has swam in this season and holds the fifth-fastest 50-yard freestyle time in championship meet history, looks to become the first three-peat champion in the event in team history, as well as the first Panther swimmer to win three straight conference titles in the same event. Only three other swimmers in MVC history have won the 50-yard freestyle in three consecutive years.
Along with Larsen, Abby Lear, Waren Graeve, and Morgan Meyer also return for Northern Iowa as the reigning MVC champions in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Panther squad set a new school, conference and championship meet record last February after clocking a 1:30.89 in Evansville.
Over in the diving well, Erica Peters and Trista Thompson have led the Panthers this season, with Peters notching a career-best score of 269.95 in the one-meter boards to secure a spot in the NCAA Diving Zones competition next month in Iowa City. Thompson has consistently placed in the top-ten on the boards throughout this season. UNI's divers will be in search of the program's first diving champion since Taylor Hogan won the three-meter competition in 2022 in Iowa City.
