UNI defeats conference preseason favorite by 15 points. Panthers visit Missouri State on Wednesday night.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI sank ten three-point field goals, including six in the second half on Sunday as the Panther men's basketball team dominated the Bradley Braves at home in a key Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) win featuring two of the league's top three teams, 83-69.
Northern Iowa battled the Braves in an early back-and-forth in the first half before shooting 61.5% in the final frame to hand the MVC preseason favorites consecutive losses for the first time this year. Four Panthers would also score in double-digit figures, including three starters in Max Weisbrod, Tytan Anderson and Jacob Hutson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers opened Sunday's marquee matchup as Anderson and Ben Schwieger helped push the offensive pace inside the paint to an early 9-4 lead. UNI capitalized on 12 first half fouls by the Braves and outscored Bradley 13-2 off nine opponent turnovers in an opening period that saw both teams shoot 38% from the floor. Northern Iowa would ride the momentum of three-point baskets by Schmitt, Trey Campbell and Weisbrod to a double-digit lead as Bradley struggled to finish close shots inside. UNI would take a 34-25 lead into the halftime break.
Northern Iowa continued its hot shooting out of the locker room with a 9-0 scoring run while holding the Braves scoreless for the first four and a half minutes of the second period. Weisbrod would dominate the final 20 minutes of action with four made three pointers while Anderson helped maintain UNI's pace inside with eight second half points. With fouls mounting on both sides, the Panthers shot 11-of-16 at the free throw line and 17-of-24 for the game, stretching their lead to as many as 30 points with Bradley hitting a handful of late three pointers to cut UNI's margin of victory to 14 points.
Weisbrod finished the game with a season-high 18 points and five made three-point shots, while Anderson posted 17 points with a team-high nine rebounds. Cael Schmitt tallied 12 points with three made triples, as Hutson also scored 12 points. Schwieger scored nine points with a career-high five assists in the win, while Kyle Pock finished with five points and both Will Hornseth and Trey Campbell with four points.
