Panther men’s hoops begins two-game road swing on Sunday at Murray State

UNI and Murray State have split the first four meetings in series. Panthers seek season-high fifth straight win this weekend.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The UNI men's basketball team seeks to extend its current winning streak to a season-high five games on Sunday as the Panthers open a two-game road trip with a visit to Murray State in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) action
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT at the CFSB Center in Murray with live coverage available on ESPN+. Fans can also catch the radio call of the game with J.W. Cox on the Panther Sports Radio Network.
Northern Iowa and Murray State have split the first four meetings of the all-time series, which began during the 2022-23 season when the Racers joined the MVC. UNI grabbed its first-ever road win at MSU last season, but came up short last month in a 71-68 home loss to the Racers. The Panthers sit at 4-4 in road games on the season and 4-3 in conference road contests.
The Panthers enter the week tied with Bradley for second place in the MVC standings and two games behind league leading Drake with an 11-4 conference record after an impressive 88-73 home win over Indiana State last Saturday inside the McLeod Center. UNI tied a home game record with a 61.9% shooting clip from three-point range, draining 13-of-21 attempts from beyond the arc while containing one of the league's best three-point shooting teams as four starters cracked double-digit scoring figures.
Tytan Anderson finished the night with a game-high 22 points and five rebounds with a pair of blocks against the Sycamores, while Trey Campbell tallied 18 points with four made three pointers and six rebounds. Max Weisbrod and Jacob Hutson posted 13 points each with Weisbrod knocking down three triples and Hutson pulling down a team-high seven boards. Ben Schwieger and Kyle Pock also finished with nine points each, with each making three baskets from range.
Northern Iowa continues to maintain a hot shooting hand this season, ranking third in all of Division I with a 49.8% shooting clip, shooting over 50% in 12 of its 26 games this year. UNI is also 14th nationally in effective field goal percentage (56.6%).
Anderson, the MVC's leader in made free throws (115) and attempts (163) who also looks to continue climbing the program's top-ten all-time steals list, leads UNI with 14.8 points per game and a team-high 6.5 rebounds a game on 57.5% shooting. Anderson last weekend, became the fourth player in UNI history to record 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 200 assists in a UNI career, joining Seth Tuttle (2011-15), Eric Coleman (2004-08) and Don Lemons (1975-79).
Hutson has notched 12.1 points and 4.1 rebounds, while Campbell has posted 11.2 points and a team-high 77 assists. Schwieger has put up 9.5 points and 4.6 boards per game as a starter in the Panther lineup in the last 18 contests. Hornseth, meanwhile,is shooting at a high percentage in his freshman season, posting a 70.2% clip on 59-of-84 shooting, currently on pace to set a new single-season field goal percentage record.
From beyond the arc, Cael Schmitt, who has appeared in eight games since his UNI and Division I debut at Southern Illinois last month, has steadily increased his minutes on the floor each game while shooting seven-for-22 from range. Weisbrod has also been a spark for Northern Iowa's three-point shooting having started the last five games and trailing on Campbell for the team lead with 35 made three pointers on 40.7%.
SCOUTING MURRAY STATE
The Racers have gone 4-6 since their last meeting with Northern Iowa in early January and enter Sunday's game with an even 13-13 record and 7-8 conference mark. MSU has won its last two games, an 18-point road win at Valparaiso and a ten-point win at home on Tuesday over UIC.
Terrance Harcum led a balanced scoring attack for the Racers in their last matchup with the Panthers, leading Murray State with 14 points, Jacobi White and Alden Applegate each notched 11 points with AJ Ferguson tallying ten points.
Murray State leads the MVC with 22.5 free throw attempts and second with 15.9 made free throws a game. The Racers have struggled however in shooting the ball, ranking tenth in the league with a 44.6% shooting clip.
Wood leads MSU with 13.3 points per game with AJ Ferguson posting 11.8 points. Kylen Milton has notched 11.6 points, while Harcum has put up 10.9 points. Wood is also third in the MVC with 4.9 assists per game.
