Saturday's night matchup will be the first all-time meeting between the Panthers and Golden Grizzlies.
Northern Iowa will look to rebound after a rough 74-69 overtime loss to Wichita State last Saturday at home, dropping the Panthers to 7-2 on the season. Tristan Smith led the Panthers with 16 points in the loss to the Shockers, while Will Hornseth posted 15 points, tied his season-high with eight rebounds and a career-best four assists. Trey Campbell tallied 14 points and five rebounds, as Leon Bond III notched 11 points and six boards.
Through nine games, the Panther defense leads all of Division I men's basketball in scoring defense, allowing just 57.4 points per game. UNI ranks 12th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.371), as well as 20th in three-point percentage defense (.273). Northern Iowa leads the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in assist/turnover ratio (1.9), second in scoring margin (16) and third in assists per game (17.2).
Senior guard Trey Campbell looks to continue to add to the record book against Oakland. Having scored his 1,000th career point last week against Coe, Campbell also became the tenth player in team history to record 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 200 assists in a Panther career, joining Ron Lemons, Dale Turner, Ben Jacobson, Eric Coleman, Jake Koch, Johnny Moran, Seth Tuttle, Jeremy Morgan and Tytan Anderson.
Sophomore forward Will Hornseth looks to continue to be a strong presence inside the paint, recently taking over as UNI's career shooting percentage leader (65.6%) with a minimum of 100 made shots.
SCOUTING OAKLAND
The Golden Grizzlies make the trip to Iowa after splitting their first five games of the season, most recently edging Toledo at home last Saturday, 98-97.
Led by longtime head coach Greg Kampe, Oakland was picked second in this year's Horizon League preseason poll behind Milwaukee, with Tuburu Naivalurua earning preseason player of the year honors.
Oakland, one of the least penalized teams in the nation with 14.5 fouls per game, has shot at a high percentage from the floor (.490) and are also one of the best transition programs in Division I, scoring 18.4 points per game in transition. The Golden Grizzlies boast a Horizon League-best 1.6 assist/turnover ratio.
Brody Robinson is among four Golden Grizzlies averaging double-digit scoring figures this season with 16.7 points a game. Isaac Garrett has posted 15.5 points per game, Naivalurua 14.2 points and Ziare Well ten points a game. Robinson also ranks sixth in the nation with 82 total free throw attempts on the year.
