UNI Panther women’s hoops can’t stave off a Saint Louis comeback and fall 62-58 in Missouri.
ST. LOUIS --- UNI Panther women's basketball headed to St. Louis for their first road matchup of the season. The Panthers led the Saint Louis Billikens for most of the game, but a late-game surge from SLU pushed the Billikens past the Panthers by a 62-58 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers came out firing and opened the matchup on a 16-6 run to take an early 10-point lead. The Billikens chipped away at the Panther lead and cut it to six at the end of the first quarter with a pair of back-to-back buckets. UNI held a 20-14 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play.
After a three-pointer from Kaylynn Janes got the second quarter rolling, UNI was forced to call a timeout following a 10-point run from Saint Louis gave the Billikens a one-point lead at 24-23 after a triple. The Panthers edged out the Billikens on the back stretch 9-8 as the teams were tied at 32 heading into the halftime break.
Out of halftime, the Panthers opened the second half on a six-point run and held the Billikens scoreless through the first four minutes of action. The Cats controlled the third quarter, scoring 17 points to SLU's 13 to give UNI a 49-45 advantage heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw Saint Louis record a trio of five-point runs to take the lead from the Panthers and lock up the game with a 62-58 victory. Taryn Wharton led the UNI scoring effort with 15 points. She added three boards and one steal to her totals. Virginia Edmondson was the other lone Panther in double figures with 13 points. Edmondson knocked down five field goals and added eight boards and two assists. Elise Jaeger finished with a game-high 11 rebounds. She added six points.
"We played hard," said head coach Tanya Warren. "We did a lot of good things. We just have to be able to execute down the stretch and, again, continue to control what we can control."
