UNI wrestling opens 2025-26 season at Journeymen Wrestling Collegiate Classic

Panthers kick off 102nd season on Sunday in Pennsylvania.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Eight months after closing out one of the most historic seasons in program history, the UNI wrestling team returns to action to kick off the 2025-26 campaign this Sunday as the Panthers head to eastern Pennsylvania for the 2025 Journeymen Wrestling Collegiate Classic.

Approximately 19 Panther wrestlers are expected to compete in the event across all ten weight classes, facing off against competition from Army, Binghamton, Columbia, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Hofstra, Indiana, Long Island, Lock Haven, Maryland, Navy, Rutgers, Sacred Heart and Virginia.
Northern Iowa begins its 16th season under the leadership of head coach Doug Schwab, the reigning NWCA National and Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year. The Panthers are coming off a 2024-25 season in which they won 14 duals, placed second at the Big 12 Championships and sent wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in all ten weight classes for the first time since 1986. UNI finished ninth overall at the national championships with two All-Americans in Parker Keckeisen and Cael Happel.
Nine members of this year's Panther squad bring experience competing at a Division I conference championship event and/or the NCAA Championships, including a pair of Big 12 champions in Wyatt Voelker (2025, 197 pounds) and Ryder Downey (2024, 157 pounds). Trever Anderson, Julian Farber, Jared Simma and Jack Thomsen have qualified for the NCAA Championships multiple times, with Caleb Rathjen bringing in Big Ten and NCAA Championship experience from his time at Iowa. Kyle Gollhofer and John Gunderson also have competed at the Big 12 Championships.
