CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Fresh off a thrilling overtime win on Saturday night on the west coast, the UNI men's basketball team will close out their three-game road trip in California on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Scisure Holiday Invitational in Palm Springs.
Northern Iowa will take on former Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) rival Loyola-Chicago on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT, followed by either San Jose State or Tulsa on Wednesday at either 1 or 3:30 p.m. CT. Live radio coverage for both games will be carried on the Panther Sports Radio Network (93.5 The Mix) with J.W. Cox and Kevin Boyle on the call. Only Wednesday's game will be televised.
UNI, which is off to its first 5-0 start to a season since the 2014-15 campaign, matches up with the Rambers for the first time since Loyola-Chicago's 2022 departure from the MVC. Tuesday's game will also be the first regular season matchup since the Panthers' topped the Rambers in the 2021-22 regular season finale, an overtime victory in Cedar Falls that clinched the MVC championship.
Northern Iowa's potential matchup with San Jose State would be its first since 1948, while UNI could potentially take on Tulsa for the first time since 1996 on Wednesday, the first meeting since the Golden Hurricanes left the MVC.
UNI came away with a 70-69 overtime victory at UC Irvine on Saturday night in southern California after senior guard Trey Campbell scored on a three-point play with 0.6 seconds remaining in overtime for a one-point Panther win. Campbell led the way with a team-high 19 points and four assists, while Kyle Pock tied his career-highs in both points (14) and made three-point baskets (4). Will Hornseth posted 11 points in the win, as Ben Schwieger notched nine points. Leon Bond III led UNI on the boards with ten rebounds along with six points, while Max Weisbrod also finished with six points and five points from Tristan Smith.
Through five games, the Panther defense has forced 74 opposing turnovers (14.8 per game), fifth-most in the MVC. UNI has also posted the league's best scoring defense early with just 59 points allowed per game, the eighth-best mark in all of Division I. The Panthers also boast the nation's 19th-best three-point percentage defense (.250).
Campbell enters Saturday night's contest with the Anteaters sitting 19 points shy of becoming the latest member of the program's 1,000 career point club. Additionally, Hornseth continues his pace to take over as UNI's all-time leader in career field goal shooting, boasting a career mark of 67.9%.
SCOUTING LOYOLA-CHICAGO
The Rambers head west to Palm Springs amid a five-game skid since beating Cleveland State on opening night, including a 76-59 home loss to Northern Illinois last week.
Under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Drew Valentine, Loyola-Chicago was picked fifth in the Atlantic-10 Conference's preseason poll with junior center Miles Rubin earning both preseason first team and defensive team honors.
Leading the nation with only nine fouls per game, Rubin leads the Ramblers with 12.7 points and six rebounds per game, with Justin Moore posting 12.3 points a game and Deywilk Tavarez with 11.8 points.

SJSU boasts the best field goal defensive percentage in the Mountain West at 34.4% and ranks 14th in Division I in effective field goal percentage (.655) and 16th in field goal percentage (.571). Four Spartans have averaged at least 15 points a game this year, led by 16.5 points by both Colby Garland and Jermaine Washington, while Yaphey Moundi has notched 16 points and Ben Rosenborough 15.5 points a game.
