CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The UNI wrestling team will get its first crack at the Big 12 Conference's newest wrestling program on Friday night as the fifth-ranked Panthers travel to Tempe to battle the Arizona State Sun Devils at Mullet Arena.
Panther fans can catch all the action live beginning at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN+ , with live results also available on TrackWrestling.Â
In addition to Friday's dual in Arizona, Northern Iowa is also expected to send a number of athletes to Ames for the Cyclone Open at Hilton Coliseum. Competition is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT with live results also available on TrackWrestling.Â
UNI has only beaten the Sun Devils twice in dual competition, coming up short in its last matchup with ASU back in Feb. 2021 in a 24-10 loss in Ames. Arizona State leads the all-time series, 7-2-1.
Northern Iowa heads west amid a hot start to the 2024-25 season, ranked fifth in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, its highest ranking since March 2014. The Panthers have also won their last ten duals dating back to last season sitting at 8-0 for the first time since going a perfect 14-0 in 2013-14.
Head coach Doug Schwab is also expected to reach another historic milestone on Friday night as he coaches his 200th career dual with UNI. The 15th year head Panther trails only Chuck Patten (316) and Don Briggs (212) for the most duals coached in team history.
The Panthers will put their undefeated dual record on the line after a perfect 4-0 performance at the National Wrestling Coaches Association's (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships in the UNI-Dome last week, where they captured the Division I men's title after routs of Sacred Heart, Ohio, Northern Colorado and No. 13 South Dakota State. UNI put up a combined record of 35-5 in its 40 matches last weekend, scoring 30+ team points in all four duals and scoring bonus points in 24 bouts.
