Panthers to take on Cornhuskers in UNI’s first FBS matchup of the 2024 season

UNI football eyes an upset when they head to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the program’s 153rd new opponent.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI football continues its three-game road stand with its first FBS matchup of the season. The Panthers travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers under the lights of Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT with live coverage available on the Big Ten Network or the Panther Sports Radio Network.
The Panthers are coming off a 17-10 victory over St. Thomas on Saturday. The victory marked the first time since 2013 that the Panthers started the season 2-0 and the fourth time as such in head coach Mark Farley's career. (2013, 2007, and 2005)
In the game against the Tommies, Caden Palmer recorded his first field goal as a Panther with a 20-yarder in the fourth quarter. Also in that game, Tye Edwards recorded back-to-back 100+-yard performances for the first time in his career with 141 yards against St. Thomas. Amauri Pesek-Hickson recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season and the third multi-touchdown game of his career with two rushing touchdowns against the Tommies.
The Panthers match up with the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the first time in program history with head coach Mark Farley still looking for his first win over a current Big Ten opponent.
UNI football currently ranks fourth in the nation and second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) in rushing offense (298.5 yards per game). Leading that charge is the nation's rushing yards per game leader Tye Edwards with 157.5 yards per game. Amauri Pesek-Hickson is ranked no. 5 in the MVFC with 93 yards per game. The Panther's defense is ranked no. 3 in the nation and first in the Valley only allowing 8.5 points per game.
Nebraska is coming off a 28-10 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes. That game saw the Cornhuskers record their 50th all-time victory over an old conference rival in front of the program's 398th consecutive sell-out crowd.
In the game, the Huskers jumped out to a 28-10 halftime lead to cruise to the program's first 2-0 start since 2016. The victory propelled Nebraska into the AP Top 25 with a no. 23 ranking heading into the matchup with the Panthers.
Nebraska comes into Saturday's matchup with a 14-0 all-time record against FCS opponents with its most recent FCS victory coming in 2022 when the Huskers defeated North Dakota by a score of 38-17.
The Nebraska defense has been on full display over the first two weeks of the 2024 season, allowing only 17 combined points to the opposition (seven to UTEP and 10 to Colorado) which is the fewest through two games since 2009 (12 points). The Husker defense has only allowed 36 rushing yards per game to opponents in 2024. On top of that, Nebraska recorded its first pick-six since 2019 in the matchup against Colorado. The defense has recorded points for the Huskers in two consecutive games this season after a safety in week one against UTEP.
