UNI wrestling: Ten Panthers medal to close out 2024 Soldier Salute

Anderson, Realbuto and Simma all place third in final tournament of the calendar year.
CORALVILLE, Iowa --- The UNI wrestling team closed out the 2024 calendar year with a strong performance on Monday during the final day of the Soldier Salute at Xtream Arena with a program record ten athletes placing in the top-eight to earn medalist honors.
Northern Iowa, which sent 22 athletes to compete in the two-day event, saw three third-place finishes, one fourth, two fifths, three sixths and one seventh-place performance. The Panthers also finished second in the team race with 126 points behind first-place Iowa (248 points) and third-place Minnesota (125 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trever Anderson (125 pounds), who dropped his opening match of the tournament on Sunday and bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket, finished strong with a 3-0 day on Monday, besting Iowa State's Ethan Perryman and Adrian Meza before defeating fellow Panther Garret Rinken, who placed fourth after recording four bonus-point wins this weekend.
No. 18 Colin Realbuto (149 pounds) opened his final day of action with a 7-2 loss to No. 6 Lachlan McNeil (North Carolina) before defeating UNI teammate Adam Allard by a 5-1 score and No. 21 Gabe Willochell (Wyoming) with a commanding 21-6 technical fall win. Allard would place fifth for the Panthers at 149 pounds after a 5-3 victory over Avery Allen (South Dakota State).
Jared Simma, ranked 13th at 174 pounds, would also place third in his bracket, bouncing back after a quarterfinal loss on Sunday night with a 4-1 win over Clayton Whiting (Minnesota) and a top-20 victory against No. 19 Joshua Ogunsanya (North Carolina), 4-1.
Julian Farber (133 pounds), making his season debut, posted a 2-1 record on Sunday, which included major decisions over Andrew Crapps (Missouri) by a 15-2 score, as well as Cale Seaton (South Dakota State), 15-1.
Cael Rahnavardi earned sixth place at 157 pounds with a 4-2 tournament record, after dropping his second match in his final bout against Sloan Swan (Wyoming). Kalob Runyon (197 pounds) would also take home sixth place with a 3-2 mark, as did Adam Ahrendsen (heavyweight). Nick Fox (174 pounds) meanwhile placed seventh, rounding out his tournament with a 10-2 major decision over Ethan Ducca (Wyoming). 184 pounder CJ Walrath also competed unattached at the Soldier Salute, placing sixth with a 4-1 record.
UP NEXT
