Realbuto, Simma advance to Soldier Salute semifinals

CORALVILLE, Iowa --- The UNI wrestling team kicked off competition at the Soldier Salute on Sunday with 22 Panthers in action as part of the two-day, 23-team event at Xtream Arena.
UNI veterans Colin Realbuto and Jared Simma both went 2-0 on the opening day of action, earning spots in Monday's semifinals, while ten other Panthers remain alive in the consolation brackets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Seventeenth-ranked Realbuto (149 pounds) earned the first of two semifinal spots for the Panthers after defeating Zac Cowens (Bellarmine) by a score of 14-9 in the first round, followed by a dominant major decision victory over Caleb Rathjens (Iowa).Â
At 174 pounds, fifteenth-ranked Simma advanced to the semifinals by virtue of a 14-10 decision over Riley Davis (Wyoming) in the opening round before extending his momentum with an 11-4 victory over Ethan Riddle (Minnesota).
In the consolation brackets, Trever Anderson (125 pounds) bounced back after falling to Jack Parker in the opening match securing two bonus-point victories, including a major decision against Shay Korhorn (Bellarmine) and a pin in six minutes and twenty three seconds against Daniel Guanajuato (South Dakota State).Â
Garret Rinken (125 pounds) also battled back after a close 2-1 loss against No. 22 Kysen Terukina (Iowa) in the second round, clinching a pair of bonus-point wins, pinning Keyan Hernandez (Iowa) in six minutes and thirty three seconds with a 15-0 technical fall over Anthony Lavezzola (Iowa).Â
Julian Farber (133 pounds) made his season debut for Northern Iowa, earning major decision victories over Tyson Charmoli (Wyoming) and Trayce Eckman (Bellarmine), but fell short against Logan Swensen (South Dakota State).
Adam Allard (149 pounds) opened his tournament with two victories but fell to No. 22 Gabe Willochell (Wyoming) in the quarterfinals in a 2-0 loss. Allard would stay alive with an 11-2 major decision over Carter Fousek (Iowa State) to extend his tournament.
At 157 pounds, Cael Rahnavardi earned a 14-3 major decision victory against Logan Swaw (Illinois) in his first bout of the day, but came up short against No.6 Tommy Askey (Minnesota) in the second round. Rahnavardi bounced back with a win over Isaiah Fenton (Iowa) with a 20-5 technical fall.Â
Nick Fox (174 pounds) went 3-1 on the first day of action, earning regular decision victories over Grant Odell (Bellarmine), Chris Moore (Illinois) and Daniel Magayna (North Dakota State). In the heavyweight bracket, Adam Ahrendsen battled back from a first round loss against CJ Carter (Iowa State) with a 9-6 win over Thad Huff (Bellarmine), while CJ Walrath, competing unattached, went 2-1 with wins against Jared Thiry (South Dakota State) and Zyan Hall (Navy).
