ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) on Tuesday morning announced the 2024 Scholar-Athlete Team for cross country following last Friday's conference championship meet in Cedar Falls.
Three Panthers were selected to this year's Scholar-Athlete Team in seniors Emma Hoins and Caleb Shumaker, and junior Amelia Hill. To receive this honor, athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.50, be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing to parallel College Sports Communicators (CSC) eligibility standards, and finish among the top-20 finishers at the MVC Championships.
Hoins, an athletic training and rehab sciences major with a 3.79 GPA, placed 12th in the women's six-kilometer race as UNI hosted the MVC Championships at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course last Friday morning, setting a new school record of 20:44 and MVC Honorable Mention recognition. Hill, a chemistry and biomedical major with a 3.79 GPA, finished in 16th place with a career-best time of 20:50. Shumaker, meanwhile, an accounting and finance major with a 3.85 GPA, broke his own school record in the men's eight-kilometer race of 24:02, finishing in 18th place.
The Panthers return to action on Nov. 15 at the NCAA Regional Championships at the Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois, hosted by Bradley University.
