UNI tennis: Brkic goes unbeaten in singles at Gopher Invite

MINNEAPOLIS --- Andrijana Brkic went unbeaten on the weekend in singles with Issa Sullivan earning multiple wins as UNI tennis opened its 2023-24 fall season over the weekend at Minnesota's Gopher Invite.
Brkic, who was named to last season's Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Select Team after posting 25 victories in singles, opened her senior season on Friday with a straight sets win over North Dakota's Sapir Sela (6-2, 6-0) and a sweep of St. Thomas' Jannah EINemer (6-0, 6-1). In her final match of the weekend, Brkic dropped the opening set to Marquette's Emilija Kojic, but quickly bounced back for the three-set win (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).
Sullivan won two of her first three matches in singles play, opening with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Addison Miller (Omaha) and a three-setter against Lara Kaiser (Marquette). The Shawnee, Kansas native would fall to EINemer on Sunday in three sets in her final match.
Darta Dalecka and Kim Zizek both earned first round wins in singles. Opening her weekend against EINemer, Dalecka swept her opponent from St. Thomas (6-4, 6-1), while Zizek defeated Omaha's Lillian Tiemeyer on Friday (6-2, 6-1).
The Panthers would have a tough start in doubles play, but saw bounce back performances on Saturday as Sullivan and Lasya Mylavarapu picked up two wins in Saturday's second and third rounds against opponents from St. Thomas and Marquette.

UNI returns to the court Sept. 15-17 at Drake's Bulldog Classic at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines.
