UNI cross country; Panthers face first test at Cyclone Preview

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI cross country will open 2023 competition bright and early on Friday morning as the Panthers visit Ames for the Cyclone Preview.
The women's five-kilometer race will begin the day at 8:30 a.m.CT, followed by the men's six-kilometer at 9 a.m. CT.
UNI was picked sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) women's preseason poll as voted on by the league's head coaches, while the men tied for eighth with Valparaiso.
The Panther women return much of last year's squad, including Emma Hoins, a top-finisher in the final three events of last season, topping an individual time of 21:42 at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Along with junior Kate Crawford, who secured a top-30 finish with a time of 22:29 to place 26th at the 2022 MVC Championships for the Panthers last season. Sophia Jungling, Lauren Klein, Ella Popenhaden, Grace Schaefer and Kaylin Lacher also return as veteran runners for UNI.Â
Joining the women's roster, UNI added six new Panthers to the team, including Makenna Edwards, Eden Mueller, Brooke O'Brien, Greenlee Smock, Kaylee Woolery and Kayla Young.Â
On the men's side, junior Brady Griebel returns for the Panthers, a top-three finisher among UNI runners last season. Also returning are juniors Drake Hanson and Caleb Shumaker, as well as sophomore's Jayden Dickson, Drew Dombrosky and Kon Dut.Â
The men's team will be joined by seven newcomers to the roster, junior transfer Tyler Colvin and six freshmen, Josh Gormley, Levi Hill, Caleb Kass, Chase Lauman, Colin Lillie and Carson Owens.Â
