UNI men's golf: Van Weelden tied for ninth after first round of MVC Championships

COAL VALLEY, Ill. --- UNI's Connor Van Weelden sank a pair of birdies on the back nine and sits among the top-10 on the leaderboard after the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championships on Sunday at the Oakwood Country Club.

Preseason favorite Illinois State leads the field at 276 with Felix van Dijk topping the leaderboard after registering a score of 65 (-6) in the opening round of play. Valparaiso sits in second place, followed by Belmont in third. UNI is tied for fourth place at 287 with Southern Illinois.

Van Weelden's birdies came on the 11th and 15th holes as part of a first round score of 70 (-1), sitting in a five-way tie for ninth place. Griffin Parker meanwhile sank four birdies, including three on the back nine to shoot a 72 (+1) to finish the day tied for 17th place. JD Pollard also carded a 72 in his opening round, sinking birdies on the holes one, 12 and 13 while shooting par on 11 holes.

Tommy Doyle began the day with a birdie on the first hole and finished with a score of 73 (+2). Despite four bogeys on the back nine, Doyle still sits in a healthy position in a tie for 23rd place. Thomas Storbeck meanwhile sank a putt for birdie on the eighth hole, but double bogeyed the tenth green and sits in a tie for 48th place after scoring a 77 (+6).

Round two of the MVC Championships is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. CT on Monday morning, weather permitting.
