Dodge and Pupillo pick up MVC weekly honors

ST LOUIS -- After a big weekend at home, two members of UNI Softball are being recognized for their hot bats and cool defensive play this week.
For the second week in a row freshman catcher, Alexis Pupillo has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Newcomer of the Week. Sophomore outfielder Mya Dodge earns her second MVC Player of the Week honor after leading the Panthers at the plate against the Drake Bulldogs and the Southern Illinois Salukis.
Dodge went 9-for-12 at-bat last week for UNI with five home runs, a double, and a triple. This included two perfect games against Southern Illinois with a perfect four hits in four at-bats on Friday afternoon and two hits with a walk in three at-bats in Saturday's single game. With two almost perfect hitting games, Dodge led the team in OPS at 3.030 with a .800 on-base percentage and a 2.250 slugging percentage, good for the best in the MVC at .941 for the season.
She also led the team in RBIs in four games last week, bringing in 16 runs and scoring 10. Now with 44 hits and 12 home runs on the season, Dodge also leads the Missouri Valley in batting percentage at .426 at just over the halfway point of the conference season. Nationally Dodge is in the Top 15 in home runs per game (0.35), RBIs (49), RBIs per game (1.44), and slugging percentage (0.941).
Pupillo had three straight games in the past week with at least one home run, connecting on multiple bombs in two games against Drake and Southern Illinois. Similar to Dodge, Pupillo launched five homers against both the Bulldogs and the Salukis, pushing her into the top spot in the conference in home runs with 14 on the season. The five home runs over the week put Pupillo past Southern Illinois' Jackie Lis for the home run title after three games going head-to-head in Cedar Falls.
Pupillo ended the weekend on a high note also having a perfect game for the Panthers by going three-for-three at the plate. Pupillo's three hits on Saturday included an RBI double and two singles while she scored three runs in UNI's 18-2 blowout of Southern Illinois. In four games, Pupillo had a .727 batting average and an OPS of 2.995 with a .812 on-base percentage and a 2.182 slugging percentage. She also helped bring multiple Panthers home with 11 RBIs while scoring 11 runs. Pupillo also led the team in the field with 33 putouts and no errors.
