UNI tennis falls to Drake on senior day, 6-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Hosting their first and only outdoor home meet this season, UNI tennis wrapped up the 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers fell to in-state rival Drake by a final score of 6-1.
Prior to the first match, UNI paid homage to its lone senior Thaissa Moreira, who has been part of the Panther program since 2019.
Playing their first doubles match as partners, Darta Dalecka and Kanyanut Sudsaard challenged Ines Stephani and Oriana Parkins-Gowin in a narrow 6-4 loss. Moreira and Issa Sullivan, who led the Panthers this season with 8 wins as a pairing also came up short in a 6-4 loss to Elizabete Klavinska and Jyun-Yi Lee in their final match together. Andrijana Brkic and Kim Zizek would face a major challenge, falling to Millie Haagensen and Darinka Stephan in a 6-0 loss.
Brkic secured UNI's lone point of the match in the No. 1 singles slot, battling Stephani in back-to-back sets decided by tiebreaker. The Panther junior would prevail in a third-set tiebreak to secure a 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 victory.
Despite a furious rally in the second set, Dalecka would fall short at No. 2 singles in a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Haagensen, as Zizek retired late in the second frame in a 6-2, 5-0 loss to Klavinska.Â
Playing her final match at UNI, Moreira put up a spirited effort against Stephan at No. 4 singles, but would fall short in a 6-3, 6-4 loss. Sullivan also battled Rebecca Ehn in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat, while Sudsaard was swept 6-0, 6-0 by Parkins-Godwin.
