Sumners, men's relay claim gold at Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. — UNI took to the track as Panther sprinters took part in the 100th running of the Kansas Relays on Friday and Saturday at Rock Chalk Park. As part of an active weekend of competition across the country, UNI picked up a pair of victories and saw several top performances in their third meet of the outdoor season.
Jack Sumners got the Panthers started with an impressive time of 14.22 seconds in Friday's 110-meter hurdle prelims before clocking a career-best in Saturday's final to win gold as the 3-seed (14.18). Sumners, a redshirt junior, sets a new career-best in the event for the second straight week after going 14.20 seconds in a third place finish at Illinois last weekend.
UNI's 4x100-meter relay team of Tinashe Chigudu, Luke Meyers, Isaiah Trousil and Deonte Dean also took first place in Saturday's finals, registering a time of 40.65 seconds. The quartet, who edged out Butler Community College by 0.16 seconds, clocked a 40.39 in Friday's preliminary heat.
Other top performances from UNI's appearance included Trousil's second palace finish in the men's 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 10.22. Chigudu finished in eighth in the prelims (10.37), with Dean took 11th place (10.46) and Meyers in 25th (10.61).
Six Panthers competed in the women's 100-meter prelims with Ariana Yaklich running a career-best mark of 11.92 second to take eighth place. Madelyn Sanda clocked a 12.03 to finish in 11th, followed by Libby Wedewer in 14th (12.12), Jill Bennett in 15th (12.16) and Eden Barrett in 16th place (12.17). In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Paige Kisley notched a 14.43 second mark, finishing in 15th place.
Wedewer ran a 24.48 in the prelim heats of the women's 200-meter dash, clocking the fourth-best time in the field, with Barrett recording a career-best mark of 24.89 seconds in 11th, while Sanda placed 16th (25.09). Dean took sixth place in the men's 200-meters with a time of 20.86, while Onal Mitchell took 16th in the prelims of the men's 400-meter dash (49.62).
