UNI women's basketball vs. Indiana State
UNI will host Indiana State over the weekend for the two teams' only game of the regular season. The Panthers will see most of their Missouri Valley Conference foes twice this season, they won't see the Sycamores outside of Sunday afternoon. UNI hopes to continue its current winning streak over Indiana State, having picked up four wins in the past two years.Â
THE PANTHERS:
- It was almost like déjà vu in UNI's second win over Drake this season. Despite a commanding 16-point lead after the first quarter, the Panthers saw themselves facing a five-point deficit with 7:30 to go. UNI stayed strong, tying the game with a minute 30 left and winning on a last-second shot from point guard Maya McDermott.
- For the second time this season, sophomore point guard Maya McDermott was the hero for the Panthers against the Bulldogs. McDermott hit almost the same shot at the McLeod Center, a quick
one-legged floater in the waning seconds of the game. The teardrop bucket got national attention on ESPN's SportsCenter from both commentator Scott Van Pelt and the day's Top 10.
- The Panther defense shined in their second game against Drake. UNI kept the Bulldogs to their lowest game in field goal percentage and three-point percentage. The Panthers also kept Drake under their average in shooting, points per game, and assists
- Along with approaching a Missouri Valley coaching milestone, Head Coach Tanya Warren is three wins away from her 300th career win as UNI's head coach. Warren currently has the most wins as a Head Coach in Panther history right above Tony DiCecco. Warren is also the second all-time leader in games coached in the Missouri Valley. She is on track to become the all-time leader on Feb. 12 at Valparaiso.
THE SYCAMORES:
- Indiana State comes into Sunday's game with an overall season record of 9-11 and an MVC record of 4-7. Of the Sycamores' four Valley wins, two came from overcoming double-digit deficits against Murray State and Valparaiso.
- The Sycamores travel to Cedar Falls after a three-game home stand at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute. While at home Indiana State picked up one win over Murray State and suffered two losses to Belmont and Evansville.
- Indiana State came one basket shy of picking up its fifth MVC win over Evansville on Wednesday. The Sycamores led by as much as 14 points in the first half but had to try and put on a fourth-quarter comeback after losing the lead to the Aces. Indiana State put up a last-second shot to try and win the game but the shot went wide.
- The Sycamores are led by senior guard Del'Janae Williams, one of three players averaging in double-figures for Indiana State. The Sycamores' other double-figure players include senior forward Chelsea Cain and senior guard Anna McKendree.Â
- Williams is nearing a career scoring mark. She currently sits 31 points away from reaching 1,000 for her career. Williams would be the 29th player in the Sycamore program to score at least 1,000 career points.
