ST. LOUIS --- Three Panther men's basketball players have been selected to the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Teams, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Redshirt freshman forward Michael Duax was named an MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team selection, while junior forward James Betz and redshirt freshman guard Landon Wolf were named to the Scholar-Athlete Third Team.
Southern Illinois' Marcus Domask was named the MVC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for a second consecutive season after sharing the honor with UNI's AJ Green last season.
Criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels College Sports Communicators (CSC) standards for Academic All-America voting. Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). He must have participated in at least 75 percent of his team's games during the regular season. No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and been on a college roster in that sport for two years. For transfers, graduate students, and two-year college graduates, the student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible, although graduate students who are competing at a different institution than the one from which they earned their undergraduate degree are eligible even if they are in their first semester at the graduate institution. Nominees in graduate school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above both as an undergrad and in grad school.
A Dubuque, Iowa native playing his first season for the Panthers, Duax has averaged 9.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 30 starts this year, complimented by a 56.1% shooting mark from the floor and 3 double-doubles. Duax was also named a CSC Academic All-District selection last week.
Betz, a fourth year forward from Ventura, Iowa has also started all 30 games for UNI this season, notching 6.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Also earning CSC Academic All-District honors last week, this is the third career honor Betz has received from the MVC after being named to the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award and the MVC honor roll last year.
Cedar Falls, Iowa product Landon Wolf picks up his second career conference honor after being named to the MVC Honor Roll a year ago. Wolf has recorded 7.8 points off the bench this season for the Panthers, ranking second on the roster with 49 made three-point field goals and shooting 37.7% from beyond the arc.
