UNI women's basketball at Murray State
In their first meeting as Missouri Valley Conference opponents, UNI blew out Murray State 81-54 at the McLeod Center. It was the first game between the two teams in over a decade after a brief home-and-home series in the mid-2000s. The game was also the first home series for the Panthers during Valley play, allowing plenty of time for the teams to improve for Saturday's contest.
THE PANTHERS:
- UNI wasn't able to split the regular season series with the Belmont Bruins on Thursday night. It was a tough battle for the Panthers, who outrebounded the Bruins and had five players score in double figures despite the 82-77 final score.Â
- The Panthers had only their second game of the season with five double-digit scorers. Four starters put up double figures including guards Maya McDermott and Emerson Green, forward Grace Boffeli, and center Cynthia Wolf. Guard Cailyn Morgan was UNI's only bench player to hit double digits on Thursday night.
- UNI can officially say they are one of the 10 youngest teams in Division I women's basketball. Of the Panthers 12 roster members, nine are listed as athletic underclassmen, making up 66% of the lineup. Only three other teams have a higher percentage of underclassmen on their roster, including South Dakota, Canisius, and East Tennessee State.Â
- Along with being the only bench player in double-figures, junior guard Cailyn Morgan set a career-high in scoring. With 12 points, four rebounds, a block, and a steal, Morgan had one of the best performances of her career. The only stat category where Morgan didn't record was an assist.
THE RACERS:
- Murray State comes into Saturday's game with a 13-13 overall record and a 6-11 MVC record. The Racers picked up their last Valley win over Southern Illinois last weekend in an 83-69 battle where Murray State pulled away in the second quarter to not trail the rest of the game.
- The Racers have excelled at home in Valley play, picking up five of their six wins at CFSB Center. Murray State had its only road win over Southern but can include wins against Evansville, Bradley, Belmont, Valparaiso, and UIC to its resume.
- Murray State redshirt senior guard Macy Turley recorded her 2,000th career point in the Racers loss against Drake on Thursday night. Turley scored 18 points, had 6 assists, grabbed 3 rebounds, and recorded both a block and a steal in her career night.
- The Racers continue to be led by forward phenom Katelyn Young throughout the season. Young was named the most recent MVC Player of the Week on Feb. 20, 2023, and has picked up the honor four separate times by leading the Valley in 30+ point games. Young is currently averaging 21.8 points a game with 8.0 rebounds.Â
