CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The Panthers will take on a busy stretch of home meets this weekend and into early next week as UNI hosts St. Thomas, SIU-Edwardsville and Omaha.
UNI last battled St. Thomas last season and picked up a 6-1 victory at home. Darta Dalecka, Lorena Cardoso, Thaissa Moreira, and Issa Sullivan all won their respective singles matches against the Tommies, with doubles wins from Dalecka/Cardoso, Brkic/Moreira and Sullivan/Olivia Fain.
The Panthers were not so lucky with their previous matchup against SIU-Edwardsville two years ago in a 6-1 loss. Dalecka was the lone Panther to secure a single victory, while she also earned a win in doubles with Cardoso.Â
UNI and Omaha were originally slated to face off back on Jan. 28, but postponed due to winter weather. The Panthers and Mavericks split a 3-3 dual in Nebraska last September that featured only 5 singles and one double match. Brkic, Lorna Cardoso and Moreira all earned singles victories for UNI last fall, while Brkic and Moreira won the lone doubles match for the Panthers.
The Panthers dropped their last two duals on the road at Northern Illinois and Chicago State last weekend, both ending in 6-1 scores. Brkic (17-5) and Kim Zizek (2-2) lead UNI with the top winning percentage in singles this season on the roster, while the sophomore duo of Dalecka and Cardoso have faced tough battles this season with a current 7-11 record in doubles. Brkic and Moreira have also maintained a 4-4 doubles mark.Â
