CEDAR FALLS, IA — UNI tennis returns home for its first home event of the 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers take on the Omaha Mavericks in dual competition. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CT at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo.
Saturday's matchup will be the second time the Panthers have faced off against the Mavericks this season in a dual. UNI and Omaha tied in a 3-3 dual in Nebraska last September that featured only 5 singles matches. Andrijana Brkic, Lorena Cardoso and Thaissa Moreira picked up singles victories for the Panthers last fall against the Mavericks, while Brkic and Moreira won the lone doubles match for the Panthers.
UNI split its first two duals of the spring season as it returned to action last weekend with a 6-1 loss at North Dakota, followed by a 6-1 win at Minnesota State. Kim Zizek won both of her singles matches in her return to the Panther roster, while Brkic improved to 16-3 in singles play this year.Â
The Panthers took 2 of 3 doubles matches from Minnesota State with Darta Dalecka and Cardoso earning their sixth win of the season together as a pair, as UNI claimed victory in 5 of 6 singles matchups.
Omaha comes to Iowa with a 1-2 mark in dual competition this season, after opening the spring season last weekend at the Hurricane Invite in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Mavericks dropped their first two duals of the year to Tulsa and Louisiana Tech by a score of 7-0, before defeating Wyoming 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
