UNI track & field shines at home in Jack Jennett Invitational

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI track and field put on a show on Friday as the Panthers hosted the Jack Jennett Invitational inside the UNI-Dome. In a meet that featured athletes from Hawkeye Community College, Mount Mercy, NIACC, Upper Iowa and Wartburg, the Panthers won 18 of the 30 contested events with a plethora of personal bests across the board.
Rylie Todd opened the meet with a commanding first place finish in the women's high jump with a 5 foot, 3 inch performance. Lydia Berns-Schweingruber secured second place with a season-best jump of 5 foot, 1 inch making that her season-best, while Layanna Green (5 feet, 1 inch) and Morgan Johnk (4 feet, 9 inches) finished in third and fourth place respectively. Caden Ungs finished in second for the Panther men in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 2.75 inches.
Kelly Proesch recorded a career-best in the long jump with a 17 foot, 8.25 inch jump for a first place finish, as teammates Katy Stephens (17 feet, 2.75 inches) and Makinley Levin (16 feet, 10.75 inches) placed second and third place. Carter Morton and Drew Bartels went 1-2 in the men's long jump with Morton taking first place with a 23 foot, 6 inch jump, and Bartels posting a season-best 23 foot, 3.25 inch jump. Bartels also won the men's 60-meter dash with a winning time of 7.06 seconds.
In the women's weight throw, Sarah Byrd finished in first place throwing a season-best 54 foot, 9.5 inch toss, with Lexie Magnani coming in second place with a throw of 49 feet, 4.25 inches. On the men's side, Justin Olson, competing unattached, won the shot put with a 62 foot, 7.25 inch throw with Jacob Baier (unattached) in second (54 feet, 10 inches).
Carson Lienau won the men's shot put (52 feet, 4.5 inches), as Brendan Safley (14 feet, 11 inches) and Aaron Sobush (13 feet, 11.25 inches) finished second and third respectively in the men's pole vault.
On the track, the UNI women secured second through fourth place in the mile run, led by Isabelle Schaffer (2nd place - 5:20.77), followed by Lauren Klein (3rd place - 5:24.18) and Abby Riley (4th place - 5:26.15). Tyler Colvin won the men's mile with a winning time of 4:26.27.
Lindsey Sires claimed victory in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.93. Bill Mukhtar led the Panthers in the men's 400-meters with a season-best time of 51.78 and a second place finish.
Lydia Berns-Schweingruber and Kyle Trunnell swept the 60-meter hurdles for UNI, with Berns-Schweingruber cutting 0.11 seconds off her career-best time (9.50). Trunnel also posted a career-best with a winning time of 8.20 seconds. The Panther women swept the top-five spots in the 60-meter dash, led by Madelyn Sanda with a season-best performance (7.75 seconds). Ariana Yaklich took second in the 60-meter dash (7.77) with Jill Bennett in third (7.81), Eva Van De Mortel in fourth (7.92) and Tyler Gray in fifth (8.05).
UNI also swept top-five finishes in the women's 200-meters with Gray leading the way for the purple and gold with a time of 25.86. Auriona Kimbrough took second place (26.00) with Erin Kerkhoff in third (26.16), Anna Winterrowd in fourth (26.54) and Van De Mortel in fifth (26.92). River Patterson won the men's 200-meter dash in a winning time of 22.54.
In the mid-distance events, Sadie Juergens clinched the women's 600-meters, posting a time of 1:40.27. Brady Griebel won the men's 800-meters (2:00.84) for the Panthers with Caleb Shumaker in fourth place (2:02.09). Kaylin Lacher finished in second for UNI in the women's 800-meters (2:22.66) as Grace Schaefer took third (2:23.55).
The Panthers closed the meet with an impressive win in the women's 4x400-meter relay as Clare Basala, Stephens, Kate Crawford and Liv Freund took first place with a winning time of 4:13.19.

The Panthers head to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, Feb. 3-4 at the Devaney Center Indoor Track. Competition is slated to begin at 12 p.m. CT on Friday, February 3, and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 4.
