UNI tennis: Andrijana Brkic opens tennis season with spot in Drake Invite championship

DES MOINES, Iowa - UNI tennis player Andrijana Brkic is in today's Flight B finals at the Drake Invite.

Brkic opened the tournament with a 6-1, 7-5 win over UNO's Sydney Weinberg. She then beat Narindra Ranaivo of UNK, 8-4. She advanced to the finals with an 8-3 win over UNO's Zoe Adkins.

Brkic will face off against Rebecca Ehn (Drake) in the finals.

In Flight A, Ana Paula Martinez of Creighton knocked UNI's Darta Dalecka into the consolations today, winning 8-1. She was eliminated from the tournament, losing 8-6 to Jazmin Zamorano of University of Nebraska - Kearney.

Also in Flight A, Lorena Cardoso wasn't able to battle back from a first-round loss and was eliminated by Valerie Negin of Creighton, who won 8-2.

Joining teammate Brkic in Flight B, Thaissa Moreira was eliminated with an 8-2 loss to Alexis Bernthal of UNK.

In Flight C, Lasya Mylavarapu lost to Clare Plachy (UNK), 8-3, sending Mylavarapu to the consolations. She advanced to the consolation finals with an 8-3 win over Gabriela Jancikova (Augustana) to face off against teammate Issa Sullivan, who opened the tournament with a win on Friday. However, she was bumped to consolations in the second round by Mata Arksey (South Dakota).

DOUBLES:

In flight A, Dalecka and Lorena Cardoso opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Keegan Van Pelt and Colby Kelley of UNO. They fell 8-5 to South Dakota's Bea Havlickova and Estella Jaeger but secured a spot in the third-place doubles match set to be played Sunday. The sophomore duo will face Melisa Becerra and Jazmin Zamorano of University of Nebraska Kearney.

In Flight B, Brkic and Thaissa Moreira fell in the first-round opener to Addison Miller and Zoe Adkins of UNO, 8-5. They battled back with an 8-5 win over Creighton's Malvika Shukla and Ana Paula Martinez to find a place in the consolation finals.

Sulivan and freshman Lasya Mylavarapu took the first match, 8-6, against Veronika Philippova and Margarita Chouliara of Augustana. USD's Mata Arksey and Anna Medvyedyeva beat the Panther duo in the next round, 8-2. UNI will face Augustana's Alexsandra Kistanova and Emily Granson in the third-place match.
