CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- UNI soccer led for all but 10 minutes in its 2-1 victory over South Dakota on Sunday afternoon.
After two losses to the Coyotes in 2021, the Panthers figured out South Dakota's defense for their second victory of the season. UNI shined in several areas of the field as three more players picked up points for the 2022 season. Along with grabbing another win for the team, Sunday's victory was Head Coach Bruce Erickson's 40th with the program, tying him for most wins as Head Coach with former HC James Price.Â
The Panthers scored early in the first half as freshman midfielder Caroline Hazen put the ball right over the Coyotes goalkeeper at the end of the ninth minute. Hazen's first collegiate goal was assisted by junior forward Ashley Harrington off a free kick.
UNI would extend its lead to two early in the second half off a header from junior forward Lauren Heinsch in the 45th minute. The goal would be Heinsch's 10th of her career, only the ninth Panther to have double-digit goals since the program began in 2000. Sophomore midfielder Olivia Knoepfle would be credited with the assist for her first point as a Panther.
Despite seeing more offensive action from the Coyotes in the second half, starting goalkeeper Caitlin Richards would make two of three saves for her seventh win. The lone goal from South Dakota came in the final seven minutes as Joana Zanin made a shot in the lower left corner.
The Panthers showed their dominance on defense and offense, leading the Coyotes in shots 10-4, shots on goal 5-2, and possession at 70%. Heinsch led UNI offensively with three shots while Hazen and sophomore midfielder Jaylie Hicklin also had multiple shots. Three other Panthers recorded at least a shot, with five players getting a shot on goal.Â
