UNI softball vs. Iowa
The in-state Iowa Hawkeyes come to Cedar Falls for the first time in three years for a midweek matchup with UNI softball. The Panthers were scheduled to play the Hawkeyes in 2020, but the matchup was canceled with the rest of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In their last meeting in 2019, UNI took the victory from Iowa 4-2 at Robinson-Dresser.Â
THE PANTHERS:
-Â The Panthers clinched the regular season Missouri Valley Conference title over the weekend with doubleheader wins against Indiana State. This is UNI's first MVC regular season title since 2017 and the 4th in program history since joining the conference in 1984.
- UNI has set a new program win streak with their 16th straight win on Sunday afternoon. Doubleheader wins against Indiana State pushed the Panthers out to 16 wins, overtaking the former program record of 14 wins in 2012.
- Along with setting a win streak record, the Panthers set a second season record on Sunday afternoon. First baseman Daryn Lamprecht hit UNI's 60th home run of the season in the Panthers second game against Indiana State. Lamprecht's home run beat UNI's former season home run record of 59 homers in 2019. Catcher Emmy Wells tacked on a three-run homer later in the game to push the new program record to 61.
- Sophomore catcher Emmy Wells took the MVC lead in RBIs as well as home runs over the week. Wells now has 16 homers and 46 RBIs in her sophomore season, good for 22nd and 13th in the country
THE HAWKEYES:
- Iowa has struggled in the conference season so far, going 2-18 against fellow Big 10 opponents. The Hawkeyes also have a 19-29 record through the regular season with a week of games left.Â
- The Hawkeyes have played eight common opponents on the Panthers schedule in South Dakota State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Wichita State, Drake, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa State. Iowa went 4-7 against common opponents.Â
- Iowa is led on offense by junior outfielder Nia Carter. Carter is hitting .385 for eighth in the Big Ten in batting average. Carter also ranks seventh in hits in the conference with 57, good for 63rd among NCAA Division I batters.Â
- The Hawkeyes have two main starters in the circle, senior Breanna Vasquez and sophomore Denali Loecker. The two have split the majority of Iowa's schedule with ERA's of 4.74 and 4.88 respectively.Â
