DES MOINES, Iowa --Â UNI softball swept the season series against in-state MVC rival Drake with a 4-1 game three win.
After sweeping the doubleheader last week back home in Cedar Falls, the Panthers grabbed the final win of the series from the Drake Bulldogs on the road in Des Moines. It was a quick game on Tuesday night as UNI kept the Bulldogs in check both at the plate and on the field.Â
The Panthers would strike early in the top of the second after both teams went down in four or less batters in the first. Drake got two quick strikes to start the inning but a single to left by second baseman Taylor Hogan got the offense started for UNI. The Panthers first hit of the day was followed by a Brooke Snider single to put Hogan in scoring position. First baseman DarynLamprecht followed up with an RBI double straight back to center that scored both runners for Northern Iowa.Â
It would be a quick third inning for both teams before UNI got their offense rolling again. Catcher Emmy Wells would get on base after a dropped third strike was mishandled by Drake's catcher to start the fourth. Hogan stepped back up to bat and made her second single to left of the game to advance pinch-runner, Maggie Erpelding.Â
Almost like deja vu, Snider followed up Hogan's single to left with one of her own to score Erpelding with no outs. After a swinging strikeout by Lamprecht, designated player Mya Dodge hit a sacrifice fly to right for run number four. UNI's final run of the day would go to Hogan.Â
Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard would strike out six batters in the final three innings of the game to help close out the win for the Panthers. Packard pitched her 17th complete game on Tuesday, allowing five hits and one run on 103 pitches. Through seven innings in the circle, Packard threw eight strikeouts with one walk.
Hogan led the offense with two runs and two hits in three at-bats. Snider also had a multi-hit game with two while Lamprecht had the only single hit outing of the day. She also led the team in RBIs with two while Dodge and Snider had one each. In the field, Wells would lead with seven putouts with the team only recording one error.Â
UP NEXT:UNI hosts its final weekend series of the season on Saturday and Sunday. The Panthers will welcome the Indiana State Sycamores to Cedar Falls with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. The doubleheader is set to begin at noon.Â
