Panther softball sweeps second day of the Governors Classic
3/5/2022 8:00:00 PM | Softball
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The UNI softball team had their best day on the field this season, going 2-0 on the second day of the Governors Classic.
The Panthers were able to complete the revenge game against Austin Peay and pick up a second win against Bellarmine on what would become the final day of the Governors Classic. The tournament hosted by Austin Peay was originally scheduled until Sunday but due to rain in the forecast, the final day of the Governors Classic has been canceled. UNI ends the tournament with a 3-1 record, their best tournament record of the season.Â
UNI vs. Austin Peay | W, 6-4
The Panthers would find themselves down early in their first game on Saturday as Austin Peay took advantage of two singles and a triple in their first four batters to grab two runs from starting pitcher Kailyn Packard. But UNI would answer immediately in the top of the second as Kylee Sanders reached base on a hit by pitch and Emmy Wells followed up with a double to right-center. The two runners would be brought home by Ellie Owen with a double to left-center to end the inning.
The Panthers fielded their way out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the second to bring leadoff hitter Mya Dodge back to the plate in the third. Dodge would lead off the inning with a solo shot to left for UNI's first lead of the game. Two more batters would get on base in Madison Parks and Sanders with a single and a Governor's error. Another Governor error during Wells's turn at the plate in the third would allow enough time for both Parks and Sanders to head home for runs four and five.Â
It would be quiet for a couple of half innings until Austin Peay threatened again in the fourth, getting batters on the corners. Two catches in center and to second base would end the Governors' try in the fourth. The previous inning would embolden the Governors as they collected four hits and two runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded after two runs scored, a fielders choice by Packard to Sanders ended the inning.Â
Only up by one, UNI would start the sixth off strong as Owen walked and pinch hitter Hannah Kelley singled to left. A single three batters later from Parks would get pinch-runner Maggie Erpelding home and add on an insurance run. The Governors would strand runners in both the sixth and the seventh as Packard struck out the final batter of the game to secure the Panther win. In a complete game, Packard allowed four runs, 12 hits, and four errors while picking up four strikeouts. Parks would be the only batter with multiple hits while six other batters collected hits against the Governors.
UNI vs. Bellarmine | W, 4-1
The second game of the day for the Panthers took a slower tone as neither team collected a hit until the third inning. UNI would go on top in the third as Owen began the inning with a walk to put pinch-runner Maggie Erpelding on base. A single from DarynLamprect and a sacrifice fly from Dodge would bring Erpelding home for the first run of the game. Two singles in the next two batters would get the Panthers second run of the game home for Lamprecht.
After the offensive run in the third, the next two innings would go back to being fairly quiet. UNI returned to its offensive ways in the top of the sixth as Wells hit her third homer of the season to left field to add on a third run for insurance. Bellarmine would get two on base and one hit in the bottom of the sixth but wouldn't bring a runner home. The Panthers would grab their last run of the game in the seventh as Dodge collected her second run of the day as a Parks single brought her home.Â
But the Knights wouldn't let UNI get their second shutout of the tournament as two hits and an error brought a run to home base. Starting pitcher Samantha Heyer would have a complete game with nine strikeouts, three hits, and one run allowed, in facing 28 batters. Despite not scoring a run, Parks led in most offensive categories for the Panthers with two hits and two RBIs.
UP NEXT:
The Panthers get almost a full week off before returning to Tennessee for the MTSU Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee. UNI will play five games over the weekend in Murfreesboro for their final weekend of non-conference play.Â
