UNI softball takes both games in Evansville double header
3/26/2022 4:46:00 PM | Softball
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Two major surges on offense would lead UNI softball to their fourth and fifth conference wins of the 2022 season against the Evansville Aces.
In both games, on Saturday afternoon the Panthers would have a multi-run inning to set up wins against the Aces. During the first game of the double-header, UNI was able to take advantage of an unusual play at first to begin an offensive surge. To clinch the double-header victory, Panther ace Kailyn Packard only allowed one hit in 16 at-bats to shut out Evansville while the UNI offense put up 10 runs in five innings of play.
Game 1 | W, 8-2
It was a slow start for the Panthers in the first game of the day as Evansville picked up a run in the bottom of the first. But UNI would be able to turn their luck around in the top of the fourth inning. After a lead-off walk for left fielder Kamryn Shaffer, shortstop Kylee Sanders would hit UNI's only triple of the afternoon to tie the game. The Panthers would grab the lead one batter later as catcher Emmy Wells hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Sanders home.
UNI would add another run in the fourth inning after a lengthy review by officials in Evansville and the conference office. Designated player Mya Dodge hit a single to left field with two runners on base bringing third baseman Brooke Snider home. The play was initially ruled out at first. But after the review it was determined that both Dodge and Aces' first baseman Haley Wolfe missed the bag, allowing the run to score and Dodge to remain on first. An out on the next UNI batter would end the Panthers offense in the fourth.
Evansville would grab a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but UNI would again put up big run numbers in the sixth to help seal the win. Snider would get a lead-off walk, as Hannah Isley came in to pinch run at first. First baseman Daryn Lamprecht would hit a double on the next at-bat, sending Isley to third. Dodge would hit her first sacrifice fly of the game to bring Isley home, while Lamprecht would come home on a base hit from right fielder Sammy Moss in the next play.
The Panthers would add two more runs in the sixth when Sanders hit her second double of the game for two RBIs as Moss and center fielder Madison Parks made it home. UNI would end the game in the top of the seventh as Dodge hit another sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Second baseman Taylor Hogan would score while the two other runners would advance a base. An out and two straight fielder's choice plays would end the top of the seventh.Â
Relief pitcher Samantha Heyer would start the bottom with a strikeout before allowing a walk. But another strikeout and a pop-up to second base would end the first game of the afternoon with the Panthers winning 8-2. Heyer would be credited with the win at the mound, throwing seven strikes and allowing just a hit after taking over for starting pitcher Hailey Sanders. Three UNI batters made multiple hits as Kylee Sanders had three while Snider and Lamprecht each had two.
Game 2 | W, 10-0
The offense would quickly return for the Panthers during their second game of the day as Dodge hit a bomb to center to start. The Aces would respond quickly after, retiring three UNI batters in order. But Panther ace Kailyn Packard would do the same in the circle through four innings. Packard allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings of work, with both Evansville runners reaching base in the fifth.Â
UNI would have multi-run innings in the second and the fifth to run-rule the Aces. Hogan, Snider, Lamprecht, and Dodge would all score in the second after two early outs by Evansville. A single from Hogan and a home run from Snider brought in the first two runs of the inning. While a double from Moss would bring Lamprecht and Dodge home after Lamprecht was hit by a pitch and Dodge got her second single of the afternoon.Â
In the fifth inning, the Aces would get the first out. But it would quickly turn into a slugfest for the Panthers as in the next six at-bats. Shaffer would start the hitting as she reached first on an error from Evansville's third baseman. Kylee Sanders hit her second double of the day to left field to bring Shaffer home. Wells reached first on a walk while Hogan hit another single to put runners at third and second. Lamprecht would clean up in the fifth inning, hitting her first home run of the season to put UNI up by double-digits.
Packard would end the game in the fifth with a strikeout after two fielding outs for the Panthers. Packard threw six strikeouts over 16 at-bats, coming two batters shy of facing the minimum possible in a five-inning game. Dodge and Hogan would be the only UNI batters with multiple hits in the second game as the team made eight hits, 10 runs, and 10 RBIs.
