UNI at Indiana State
The Panthers close out the regular season on the road for the second year in a row and the third season in five years. This year UNI will end their season in the Hoosier state as they make stops in Terre Haute and Evansville to take on the Sycamores and the Aces. The Panthers first game of the week will be at the Hulman Center for an early evening game against Indiana State.Â
THE PANTHERS:
- The Panthers closed out their final weekend at home with a bang collecting two wins over the Bradley Braves and the Illinois State Redbirds. In their Friday evening game against Bradley, UNI recorded their fourth largest scoring margin and second largest in conference play, winning 77-56. During the final home game of the regular season and Senior Day the Panthers beat the Redbirds 70-63 to move ahead in the MVC standings to 3rd and to have a shot at the second seed for Hoops in the Heartland next weekend in Moline.Â
- Freshman forward Grace Boffeli had her sixth double-double of the season. She now has 241 rebounds on the season, the 7th best rebounding season in Panther history. She is only one rebound away from having the 6th best rebounding season, currently held by Amber Kirschbaum.
- Senior guard Karli Rucker moved firmly into 3rd place on the Panthers career scoring list Friday evening. With 10 points against the Braves, Rucker surpassed former guard Madison Weekly for the spot with 1,769 career points.
- After taking 3rd place in overall Missouri Valley Conference wins among past and present coaches, Head Coach Tanya Warren now also holds 3rd place for most wins among Missouri Valley coaches. Coach Warren's 278 wins puts her right above former Illinois State Coach Jill Hutchinson.
THE SYCAMORES:Â
- After beginning the MVC season 4-5 the Sycamores have struggled in the second half, only grabbing a win against Bradley at the beginning of February. With one week left to go in the regular season, Indiana State is looking to grab either the seventh or eight seed for the MVC Tournament.
- Indiana State looked close to knocking off the Missouri State Lady Bears over the weekend with a 26-point fourth quarter. But the rally would fall just short as the Sycamores only scored nine points in the third and dropped the game to the Lady Bears 72-65.
- The Sycamores have two players averaging in double figures during the MVC season. Junior guard Del'Janae Williams and graduate student guard Marie Hunter average 12.8 and 10.2 points per game respectively. Each player also leads Indiana State in a separate category with Williams leading the team in assists while Hunter leads the team in steals.
- In their last meeting with the Panthers, Indiana State would come out on the losing side of a 72-49 game at the beginning of February. The game was rescheduled from a previous date earlier in the season due to a COVID-19 pause within the UNI program.
THE ACES:
- While Evansville looked poised to defy expectations with a 6-4 start to the year in the non-conference season, the Aces struggled in conference play. Evansville currently holds two conference wins against Bradley and travel partner Indiana State. When it comes to Hoops in the Heartland, the Aces are looking to clinch the 9th seed ahead of Bradley.
- The Aces lost their last meeting with UNI in an early week matchup on Tuesday Feb. 8. The Panthers would come out on top 78-58 in a win that included a career scoring night for senior Bre Gunnels and center Cynthia Wolf's first double-double of the season.
- Evansville is led by three main players, transfer guard Je'Naiya Davis, junior guard/forward Abby Feit, and transfer guard Myia Clark. All three are shooting in double-figures with Davis being named the MVC Newcomer of the Week three times by league SID's while Clark has been named MVC Newcomer of the Week once. Feit has been a scoring presence for the Aces since her freshman year in 2019-2020.
- Feit also helps lead the team on defense as a guard and forward combo for the Aces. Feit is third in the MVC for overall rebounding as she averages 8.1 rebounds right behind Panther Grace Boffeli. Feit is also in the top 10 in the MVC in steals, blocked shots, defensive rebounds, and minutes played.
