UNI enters final day of MVC Championships in second

IOWA CITY, Iowa - For the third day in a row, the University of Northern Iowa Swim and Dive team remain in second place with 312 points after a third-place finish by Amber Finke and a fourth-place finish by Helena Heuberger in the 100 backstroke.
Lauren Havertape, Abby McCorkle, and Scout Bergwall raced in the 100 butterfly to start the final races. Havertape finished in 16th with a 57.43 with McCorkle (19th, 57.28) and Bergwall (21st, 57.55) following.Â
Lily Ernst finished seventh in the 400 I.M. after a swim of 4:32.39. Two Panthers, Meghan Pallett and Olivia Chambers earned new positions on the all-time top-10Â list with their swims in the 400 I.M. Pallett ranks third with a time of 4:30.00 and finished ninth in the race while Chambers finished 14th and is seventh on the Top Ten list after a swim of 4:33.53.Â
Abbie Bangs (1:52.77) and Natalia Verastegui (1:53.12)Â finished the 200 freestyle 35 hundredths of a second apart, Bangs took 12th while Verastegui placed 13th. Following were teammates Sarah Walpole in 19th palace and Rachelle Houlette in 20th place.Â
With a swim of 1:04.37 and advancing her all-time top-10 position, Ema Lavigne ended the 100 breaststroke in 10th place. Also finishing the 100 breast was Mia Savicevic (14th), Lauren Havertape (15th), and Meghan Pallett (18th).Â
A whole pack of Panthers represented UNI in the 100 backstroke in day three finals of the MVC Championship. Leading the pack was Finke who raced in 54.44 seconds and now sits second on the all-time top-10 Panther list. Not far behind Finke was Heuberger who recorded a new personal best with a swim of 54.99 seconds. Also finishing the 100 backstroke was McCorkle, Payton Hall, and Bergwall.Â
Maddie Moran competed in the B-finals on the 3-meter boards. She scored 206.55 on her preliminary dives that had a total difficulty of 14.10.Â
To finish out the night, the UNI-A Relay with Amber Finke, Ema Lavigne, Lily Ernst, and Faith Larsen swam the 400 medley relay in 3:46.27 to hold a fourth-place finish. Ernst swam her leg of the relay in 55.36 seconds to catch up to the University of Evansville's relay team, knocking them out of fourth place.Â
The Panthers gather at the pool for the final day of competition tomorrow at 11 a.m. for preliminary races and again at 6 p.m. for the finals. Senior Recognition will begin at 5:40 p.m. for all teams.Â
