Panther softball rallies for split with grand slam

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The UNI softball team used a grand slam to rally for a split in the second day of the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic.
UNI vs. South Dakota State | L, 3-9
The Panthers got off to a strong start on Saturday afternoon with a leadoff home run from outfielder Madison Parks to have the early lead. UNI was able to push the lead out to two in the bottom of the second as infielder Taylor Hogan hit a home run of her own into right field. South Dakota State would answer with a three-run top of the third to take the lead 3-2. With a dropped third strike to start the inning, the Jackrabbits were able to bring in in three runs off a single and a sacrifice fly.
SDSU would add to their lead in the fifth and seventh innings that included five runs in the final inning. The Jackrabbits scoring in the seventh would begin with a leadoff homer and end with a RBI double to grow their lead to seven. The Panthers would try for the rally in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run from Kylee Sanders on a Dodge single. But an out the following play would end the game, making UNI 1-2 in the tournament with two straight losses to the Jackrabbits.
UNI vs. Omaha | W, 6-4
In the Panthers second straight game of the evening, Nebraska-Omaha would strike first on a ground rule double RBI. But UNI would jump on offense early as Parks scored for the second straight game on a single from left fielder Kamryn Shaffer. The Panthers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third as catcher Emmy Wells brought in designated player Mya Dodge on a single after Dodge hit a triple to begin the frame.
Omaha would push out ahead in the fifth inning by a run after two would come in on a hit by pitch and a fielders choice. The Mavericks would also tack on a run in the top of the sixth, growing their lead up to two on a late fielders choice. But with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Dodge hit a grand slam to right field to give the lead back to the Panthers. Winning pitcher Hailey Sanders would throw a three-up, three-down top of the seventh to secure the victory for UNI.

The Cyclones are 3-0 on the tournament so far with wins against Omaha, Nebraska, and South Dakota State. The final game of the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic will take place in the late afternoon.
