2/11/2022 7:30:00 PM | Softball
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- To kickoff the 2022 season, the UNI softball split their first day of games at the annual Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic tournament.
It was a much anticipated Opening Day in Cedar Falls as Panther softball hosts the annual Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic, featuring five teams from across the Midwest. In their first day of action UNI split their two games, winning a close game against the Nebraska Huskers and dropping a game in extras to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
UNI vs. Nebraska | W, 2-1
It was a pitchers dual to begin the tournament for the Panthers as starter Kailyn Packard pitched a complete game against Nebraska's Olivia Ferrell. Through seven innings of play, Packard pitched six strikeouts on 29 batters faced while allowing six hits. But it would be the Huskers who struck first as Abbie Squire hit a leadoff home run to begin the inning. The Panthers would lock it down after the run, getting two putouts and catching a runner stealing.
Facing a 1-0 score with a half inning left the UNI offense got its bats going from the start. Seventh inning leadoff hitter Kamryn Shaffer made it to first on a Husker error while designated player Mya Dodge singled to left field. Pinch hitter Addison McElrath would drive in the first run on a ground rule double to get Shaffer home while Maggie Erpelding came in to pinch run. Daryn Lamprecht would come up to bat and get a strong single to third base walking off the game as Dodge made it home.
UNI vs. South Dakota State | L, 1-2 (Extras)
For the Panthers second game of the day it was a slower start on offense but strong defensive play led the way. Starting pitcher Hailey Sanders struck out two in the first while the lone hit of the inning was caught stealing at second. But the Jackrabbits would get on the board early with a home run in the second to take a one run lead. UNI would tie the game up in the bottom of the seventh following four innings of strong defensive play and a pitching change to Samantha Heyer in the top of the fourth.
A leadoff home run from catcher Emmy Wells gave the Panthers the tying run. UNI's next three batters would be retired in order, taking the game into extra innings. With the international tiebreaker rule in place each half inning started with a runner on second base. The Panthers quickly moved through the top of the eighth retiring the three hitters in order on two strikeotus and a putout. In the bottom of the eighth Lamprech would again get the ball out to center field, advancing Dodge to third on the sacrifice fly. Sammy Moss would reach first on a walk for UNI but a strikeout swinging on Parks would leave her and Dodge stranded.
In the top of the ninth the Jackrabbits would get their final run of the game from Culver. She would score on a wild pitch after advancing to third on a sacrifice play. The Panthers would get another player on base in the bottom of the ninth as Wells walked to first and Parks was placed on second. A strikeout from Shaffer and a popup from Snider would end the game as UNI suffered their first loss of the young season.
