UNI wrestling: Panthers close Soldier Salute with two top-five finishes

Panthers look ahead to Big 12 dual competition beginning next week against Wyoming. Tickets now available.
CORALVILLE, Iowa --- Six Panthers took home top-eight finishes on Friday night as UNI concluded competition at the inaugural Soldier Salute at Xtream Arena. Four UNI wrestlers also placed in the consolation brackets, with two battling back to clinch consolation bracket titles.

DAY TWO
Battling back from a tough semifinal loss against No. 7 Jacob Warner (Iowa), Wyatt Voelker, competing unattached, took 4th place at 197 pounds after falling to Iowa's Zach Glazier in a 12-3 major decision in the championship bracket. RJ Weston competed in the championship bracket as well, taking 5th place at 157 pounds following a 5-3 decision against No. 30 Nathan Lukez (Army).
Evan Yant narrowly fell short in a 5-3 decision loss to Wyoming's Cooper Voorhees to take 8th place at 157 pounds. Garrett Funk (133 pounds), Connor Thorpe (141 pounds) and Adam Ahrendsen (197 pounds) also took home 8th place finishes in their respective weight classes.

Trever Anderson (125 pounds | Unattached) - 1st Place

Won his final three bouts, including a 12-1 major decision over Charles Matthews (Iowa) and a 3-2 decision over Caelan Riley (The Citadel).

Christian Minto (165 pounds | Unattached) - 1st Place

Roared back with four straight wins, including a pair of major decisions and a 12 second pin of Raheem Rahamatulla in the consolation semifinals.

Wade Mitchell (157 pounds) - 3rd Place

Bounced back after a tough opening day of competition for a 3rd place consolation finish after a 5-3 decision over Andrew Gar (Columbia).

Cory Land (133 pounds) - 6th Place

Finished the weekend with a 1-2 record with a 36 second pin of George Rosas (The Citadel) on Thursday.

DAY ONE
At 157 pounds, Weston picked up a pair of decision victories over Wyoming's Bryce Dauphin and Army's Tanner Craig to move into the semifinals.Â
Voelker, competing unattached at 197 pounds, also made his way into the semifinals with a 10-3 decision over Chase McCleish (Unattached-Jackrabbit Wrestling Club) and a 13-8 decision over Tyler Mousaw (VMI).Â
After dropping his first match, Funk bounced back to pick up a decision over teammate Land at 133 pounds, and 6-3 decision over George Rosas (Citadel).Â
Thorpe (141 pounds) and Yant (157 pounds) both battled through the consolation brackets to stay in contention for third place. Thorpe closed out the day with a 12-2 major decision over Kyle Kantola (Indiana Tech).
At 197 pounds, Ahrendsen bounced back from a loss to No. 7 Jacob Warner (Iowa) to stay alive for a chance at third place.Â
Ahrendsen picked up the first of three pins for the Panthers, pinning Bellarmine's Royce Hall at 197 pounds in just 31 seconds. In the 133-pound consolation bracket, Land pinned The Citadel's George Rosas 36 seconds into the bout, and Yant pinned teammate Mitchell in 38 seconds.
Thursday's opening sessions also included a 14-4 major decision by Thorpe at 141 pounds over The Citadel's Jacob Silka as well as an 11-3 major decision from Adam Allard against Carson DesRosier at 149 pounds.Â
Anderson (125 pounds) and Minto (165 pounds), both competing unattached, advanced in the consolation brackets, as did Land (133 pounds) and Mitchell (157 pounds).
UP NEXT
UNI returns home on Jan. 5 as the Panthers host Wyoming in its first home dual against Big 12 competition at 7 p.m. CT in the McLeod Center.
