CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- A couple of Panthers spiked in the rankings as No. 22 UNI wrestling prepares to open dual action at the Collegiate Duals Dec. 19-20 in New Orleans.
UNI kicks off the dual season against Lock Haven at 10 a.m. CT on Dec. 19 before facing No. 3 Ohio State at 2 p.m. CT later that day. Placement bouts on Dec. 20 will be determined by the pool results from the opening day.Â
Kyle Biscoglia cracked the top-10 rankings (up from No. 24) after three top-25 wins at the Cliff Keen Invite at 133 pounds. Biscoglia knocked off No. 6 Dylan Ragusin (Michigan), 6-5, No. 7 Chris Cannon (Northwestern), 9-2; and No. 18 Cody Phippen (Air Force), 3-0.
Cael Happel, 141 pounds, jumped to No. 7 (up from No. 15). Happel has racked up three top-20 wins with two decisions over Clay Carlson of South Dakota State. Carlson was ranked No. 5 when they faced in an open tournament and was at No. 16 in the rankings when Happel extended his lead at the Cliff Keen Invite. Happel also beat No. 12 Tom Crook (Virginia Tech) at the Cliff Keen Invite.
Heavyweight Tyrell Gordon is No. 11 in the nation (up from No. 23). Gordon had two top-15 wins at the Cliff Keen. Gordon took down No. 7 Tate Orndorff in a 3-2 decision before beating No. 14 AJ Nevills (South Dakota State) in a 3-1 decision to take fifth.Â
LAST TIME AT THE COLLEGIATE DUALS
The Panthers competed at the Collegiate Duals last year in Niceville, Fla. Heavyweight Tyrell Gordon recorded his first top-20 career with a 4-2 decision over No. 20 Zachary Knighton-Ward of Hofstra.Â
UNI opened with a 29-7 loss to No. 11 Cornell before losing to No. 2 Penn State, 29-9. The Panthers closed the dual tournament with a dominating win over Hofstra. Despite forfeiting at 125 pounds, UNI won 33-9. The Panthers got a boost off three pins in that matchup.Â
LOCK HAVEN (1-2 / 0-0 MAC)
Lock Haven opened the dual schedule with a pair of top-10 opponents, losing to top-ranked Penn State, 44-3, and No. 8 NC State, 32-4. The Bald Eagles' lone win has come against Davidson, 31-13.Â
LHU is expected to be without one of its two ranked wrestlers with true freshman Ethan Miller stepping in at heavyweight for No. 16 Isaac Reid, who has yet to make his season debut.Â
NO. 3 OHIO STATE (4-0 / 0-0 Big Ten)
Despite forfeiting a bout at 165 pounds, OSU is coming off a 32-9 win over Kent State to roll into the Collegiate Duals undefeated at 4-0.Â
Carson Kharchla is expected to miss another dual after taking eighth at the 2022 Cliff Keen Invite at 165 pounds.
Freshman Nic Bouzakis stepped in at 133 pounds in place of 14th-ranked Jesse Mendez in OSU's dual against Kent State. Senior transfer Tate Orndorff medically forfeited matches at the Cliff Keen Invite and also sat out OSU's dual with Kent State, giving freshman Mike Misita his first dual competition.Â
Orndorff opened the Cliff Keen Invite with a win. UNI's Gordon knocked him off in a 3-2 decision in the second round. Orndorff responded with a 16-second fall against Jacob Cover of Kent State and a 7-1 decision over Mason Fiscella of Appalachian State before having to medically forfeit against Owen Trephan of NC State.Â
OSU returns all eight of the NCAA qualifiers from 2022. Head coach Doug Schwab is 1-0 against OSU. The Panthers won in Schwab's first year as head coach on Jan. 8, 2011. They beat the Buckeyes 20-19 at the National Duals held in the UNI-Dome.
