Panther sophomore to compete in second major para-swimming event against multiple Paralympic gold medalists.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI swimmer Olivia Chambers is set to compete in her second major para-swimming event this weekend as she heads to Charlotte, N.C. for U.S. Paralympic National Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
Chambers, who is classified as legally blind under World Para Swimming's disability classifications as an S13 athlete, will compete in five events in Charlotte against several of the top para-swimmers in the world, including Paralympic gold medalists Jessica Long, McKenzie Coan, Mikaela Jenkins and Elizabeth Marks.
Chambers will open the meet with the 400-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly events on Friday, before competing in the 100-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle on Saturday. The Little Rock, Ark. native will close the meet on Sunday with the 200-meter individual medley.
The UNI sophomore biology major, who seeks to qualify for the U.S. Paralympic Team for the 2024 games in Paris, has competed in two para-swimming events already this year. Back in August, Chambers set a new Para-American record in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 5:21.68, breaking a mark previously held by three-time Paralympic gold medalist Rebecca Meyers. Chambers also competed in the Citi Para Swimming World Series in its Tijuana event in Mexico back in October, where she took home a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle and bronze in the 100-meter butterfly.
