Multi-event athlete earns conference recognition after a career-best performance at ISU Holiday Invitational.
ST. LOUIS --- UNI junior Carter Morton has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Male Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday morning. The selection marks Morton's second time receiving a weekly conference honor in his career, and first since January 2022.
Morton's recognition comes after a breakout performance during his first meet of the 2022-23 indoor season last weekend at the ISU Holiday Invitational in Ames, where he recorded the fourth highest Heptathlon score in UNI history with 5,651 points, which currently ranks as the top score in the event in the nation. His performance also marked his second career win in the event.
Morton recorded career bests in five of the seven events in last weekend's Heptathlon, including the 60-meter dash (7.11), shot put (38-5), the high jump (6-10.75), the pole vault (15-1) and the 1000-meters (2:46.94).
The Jefferson, Iowa native took second place in the Heptathlon at last season's MVC Indoor Championships in Chicago, and won his first title in the event at the Hawkeye Invitational last January.
Indiana State sprinter Isiah Thomas took home MVC Male Track Athlete of the Week honors, while his teammate Ryann Porter was named the conference's Female Field Athlete of the Week. Hassy Fashina-Bombata was named the MVC's top female track athlete for the week.
Morton and the Panthers return to action Jan. 14 for the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City at the Iowa Indoor Track Building.
