Panthers to host 2023 MVC Championships, Feb. 15-18 in Iowa City
ST. LOUIS --- UNI swimming and diving has been picked sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) coaches poll, as announced by the league office on Friday morning.Â
Defending champion Missouri State earned nine of ten first-place votes as the Bears seek to win their 19th MVC title in the last 21 years. Illinois State was selected second in the poll, followed by Southern Illinois.
Marshall, who begins its first season as an affiliate member of the league in 2022-23 was tabbed to finish fourth, as Indiana State was picked fifth with the lone remaining first place vote. UIC, Little Rock, Evansville and Valparaiso all follow UNI to round out the ten-team poll.
In his sixth season at the helm of the program, head coach Nick Lakin leads a Panther squad that has seen a number of breakout performances through the first two meets of the season, including sprinter Faith Larsen, as well as Amber Finke and Hallory Domnick. On the boards, UNI returns reigning MVC Diver of the Year Taylor Hogan along with her coach Bethany Hovland, who earned MVC Diving Coach of the Year honors last season.
Six Panthers earned All-MVC honorable mention honors last winter, with Finke also being named the recipient of the conference's Elite 17 Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average competing in the league's championship event. UNI finished fifth at the 2022 MVC Championships at the Campus Recreation-Wellness Center in Iowa City.
UNI will once again play host to this year's MVC championship meet, Feb. 15-18 in Iowa City, marking the third time in the last seven years the Panthers have hosted the top swimmers and divers from around the conference.
The Panthers return to action tonight as they kickoff the first day of the Coyote Extravaganza in Sioux Falls, S.D.
