Packard Pitches No Hitter as Panthers Go 2-0

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Panther softball team took on the Salukis of Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon, going 2-0 on the day. Saturday was highlighted by 2 standout performances as Emmy Wells hit a grand slam to secure the win in game one and Kailyn Packard pitched a no hitter in game two.

Game 1: UNI 7, SIU 5
The Panthers got on the board first in the second inning from a Kamryn Shaffer solo home run, Shaffer's 13^th career home run. The Salukis added 2 runs in the top of the third. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the third when Daryn Lamprecht crossed the plate following a Sammy Moss hit down the left field line. The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth following a Taylor Hogan homerun, her first homerun of the season.

UNI pitcher, Samantha Heyer was hit by a hard hit ball and left the game, Hailey Sanders entered the circle in relief. SIU took the lead in the 6^th after scoring 2 runs. The Panthers had bases loaded in the bottom of the 6^th inning when Emmy Wells smashed a grand slam to give the Panthers a 7-4 lead. The Salukis added another run in the top of the 7^th. Emmy Wells entered the circle for the Panthers with 2 outs in the top of the 7^th.

Sammey Bunch went 3-3 from the plate with 1 walk, the only Panther with more than 1 hit. Samantha Heyer pitched 5 innings with 5 strikeouts. Hailey Sanders pitched 1.2 innings with 2 strikeouts. SIU's Sarah Harness pitched 6 innings with 8 strikeouts and a 2.11 ERA.

Game 2: UNI 1, SIU 0
After 2 scoreless innings, Sammey Bunch hit an RBI double to center field to put the Panthers up 1-0. Kailyn Packard received the start in the circle, dominating the game, pitching all 7 innings, facing 26 batters with 9 strikeouts. The redshirt sophomore recorded a no hitter, throwing 128 total pitches. Packard has been the Panthers ace all season and has a season ERA of 1.70 in 148 innings pitched with 13 strikeouts.

Taylor Hogan went 2-3 at the plate while Sammey Bunch finished 1-2 with 1 walk. Both teams left 5 runners on base.
