ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Parker Keckeisen has secured UNI wrestling's first redshirt all-American since 2017 with a place in today's semifinals at 184 pounds.Â
Keckeisen, seeded No. 4, took No. 5 Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech into a second sudden victory after each scored a point in the first tiebreakers. A takedown gave him the 4-2 victory. He faced top-seeded Aaron Brooks of Penn State and was edged out in a 6-4 decision.Â
Keckeisen is guaranteed at least a sixth-place finish. He will open tomorrow with No. 7 seed Brit Wilson of Northern Illinois.
At 125 pounds, No. 5 seed Brody Teske was bumped into the consolations after a loss in sudden victory. Teske scored a reversal in the second period, but No. 4 Drew Hildebrandt of Central Michigan tied it up with a takedown late in the third to send the match to sudden victory. Hildebrandt grabbed another takedown to advance, winning 4-2.
Teske was eliminated from the tournament by No. 15 seed Patrick McKee of Minnesota in a 9-2 decision.
Max Thomsen took fifth at 149 pounds in St. Louis as a redshirt freshman in 2017. Keckeisen continues the medalist streak for the Panthers. UNI has had at least one all-American since 2016 and held the top spot at 184 pounds in 2020 and 2019:
2020: Taylor Lujan (top seed) 184 pounds, Bryce Steiert (fifth seed) 174 pounds
2019: Drew Foster 1st, 184 pounds / Bryce Steiert 8th, 165 pounds
2018: Jacob Holschlag 5th, 197 pounds
2017: Max Thomsen 5th, 149 pounds / Drew Foster 7th, 184 pounds
2016: Dylan Peters 6th, 125 pounds
EARLY MATCHES
Triston Lara, who was seeded 23rd, ended his run at the championships after knocking off a top-10 seed yesterday. No. 8 Jaden Abas of Stanford took the match in a 4-1 decision.Â
No. 33 Austin Yant forced No. 18 Izzak Olejnik of Northern Illinois into sudden victory but ended his tournament run with an 8-6 loss.
Heavyweight Carter Isley, seeded 15th, opened the day with a 7-5 decision over No. 16 Luke Luffman of Illinois. However, a major decision loss to Stanford's Nathan Traxler stopped Isley's run.Â
