ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The UNI wrestling team opened the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with a fall and top-10 upset. Two Panthers notched bonus points in the second half of the day.
Two Panthers are headed to the quarterfinals, and three Panthers are still alive in the consolations. The team is sitting in a three-way tie for 12th place after the first day.
Brody Teske, seeded fifth at 125 pounds, started the day with a pin over No. 28 seed Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State. The 2 minute, 40-second fall is Teskes's fastest career pin. Teske advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 decision over No. 12 seed Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern.
Triston Lara knocked off No. 10 seed Mike Van Brill of Rutgers. Van Brill, a two-time NCAA qualifier, was third at the Big 10 championships at 149 pounds. However, No. 7 seed Jonathan Millner of Appalachian State edged out Lara with riding time, defeating Lara 9-8. Lara will open Friday morning in the consolations against No. 8 seed Jaden Abas of Stanford.
Austin Yant, 165 pounds, won his opening match against Ricky Stamm. However, he was bumped to the consolations with a major decision loss to No. 1 Alex Marinelli, a three-time All-American from Iowa. He knocked off No. 16 William Formato of Appalachian State with an 11-2 major decision to advance on the backside.
At 184 pounds, No. 4 seed Parker Keckeisen beat Sam Colbray for the second time this year. The 2-1 decision set up the match against No. 20 David Key of Navy. Keckeisen went on the attack, notching a 6-0 lead off the whistle. He earned his fourth major decision of the year, winning 16-5.
Heavyweight Carter Isley, seeded 15th, grabbed a takedown late in the third period to earn a 3-1 decision over Hunter Catka, a true freshman who was second in the ACC. No. 2 seed Mason Parris of Michigan pushed Isley to the consolations.
Lance Runyon, the No. 29 seed at 174 pounds, withdrew from the tournament as a result of an injury. The redshirt freshman ends his promising season with a 6-5 record.
