
Panthers Challenge Bulldogs on Friday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's tennis team opens Missouri Valley Conference play against in-state rival Drake on Friday at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo at 1 p.m. A limited number of fans will be allowed and are requested to contact the Black Hawk Tennis Club ahead of Friday's match. Last time out UNI hosted Upper Iowa, sweeping the Peacocks, 7-0, on Mar. 5. The Purple and Gold swept the doubles point, posting scores of 6-0 on all three courts. In singles action, the Panthers notched two-set wins on all six courts. Senior Valentina Caro shut out Alejandra Abella, 6-0, 6-0, on the No. 4 court. Sophomore Thaissa Moreira and freshman Issa Sullivan defeated their opponents, 6-0, 6-1, on the No. 3 and No. 6 courts, respectively. Junior Olivia Fain posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mya Herrmann on the No. 5 court. Sophomore Emma Carr posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory on the No. 1 court over Varvara Ogorodnikova and senior Madeline Doherty closed out the sweep with a 7-6(3), 6-0 win over Jessa Michieli on the No. 2 court.
Last Time Against Drake
Last season's dual match against the Bulldogs, set for Apr. 3, was canceled due to the pandemic. During the 2018-19 season, the Panthers met up with Drake on Apr. 5 in Cedar Falls, falling 6-1 to the Bulldogs. On court No. 5, Caro posted the Purple and Gold's sole point, leading the first set 2-1, before her opponent retired. In doubles action, Fain/Daisy Phillips defeated Kenya Williams/Sophia Haleas, 6-3, but it wasn't enough to secure the doubles point.
Scouting Drake
The Bulldogs are 4-4 (0-0 MVC) and coming off a 6-1 loss to Iowa State on Mar. 6. Drake opened the season with a 4-3 loss to North Dakota in Des Moines on Jan. 31 before edging out South Dakota, 4-3, on Feb. 6. Dropping contests to Kansas State and Wichita State, the Bulldogs bounced back to record 7-0 sweeps of Colorado State and Omaha . Drake also edged out Grand Canyon, 4-3, in Des Monies on Feb. 28.
Leading the Bulldogs in singles action is senior Liza Petushkova, who boasts a 5-3 (0-0 MVC) record from the No. 1 court. Following Petushkova is junior Daria Walczak, who is 4-4 (0-0 MVC), splitting her time between the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Going 4-3 (0-0 MVC) from the No. 4 court is freshman Ines Stephani. In doubles action senior duo Petushkova/Maria Tatarnikova are 5-3 (0-0 MVC) on the No. 1 court, while freshman duo Darinka Stepan/Stephani are 4-2 (0-0 MVC) on the No. 3 court.
Last season Drake went 6-4 (0-0 MVC). Early in the season, the Bulldogs posted wins over Sacramento State and South Dakota. The Bulldogs dropped contests to Kansas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa State before going on a four-match win-streak from Feb. 22 to Mar. 1, defeating Milwaukee, Gustavus Adolphus, North Dakota and Kansas City. The Mar. 1 sweep of Kansas City was Drake's final match of the 2020 season.
