
UNI Set to Clash with Saint Louis, Washington U, and SIUE Over Weekend

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's tennis team hits the road this weekend to take on Saint Louis, Washington U, and SIU-Edwardsville. Stopping in St. Louis, Mo. the Panthers will clash against Saint Louis on Friday at 4:00 p.m. before taking on Washington U. on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. The Purple and Gold will close out the weekend in Edwardsville, Ill. when they take on SIUE at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
UNI is 1-3 (0-0 MVC) after hosting Omaha last Saturday and Sunday. Saturday saw the Panthers fall, 5-2, to the Mavericks, with sophomore Emma Carr and junior Olivia Fain posting three-set victories in singles play. Carr defeated Madison Gallegos, 7-5, 0-6, 10-6, on the No. 1 court, while Fain pushed past Colby Kelley, 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 11-9 on the No. 5 court.
The Mavericks edged past UNI on Sunday, 4-3. On the No. 1 singles court Carr defeated Ines Absisan, 6-4, 6-4, and senior Valentina Caro downed Lily Tiemeyer, 6-4, 6-3, on the No. 4 court. Locked in a three-set battle against Kelley on the No. 3 court, sophomore Thaissa Moreira won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 4-6, and bouncing back to take the third 7-6(3).
Last Time Against Saint Louis
UNI last met with Saint Louis, Sept. 27-29, 2013, at the UNI Invitational in Cedar Falls. Erica Medlin, Elvira Lopez, and Krissy Lankelma notched wins against the Billikins in singles Flights 1, 2, and 3.
Scouting Saint Louis
Saint Louis' season opener against Eastern Illinois, originally set for Feb. 19, was postponed. The Billikens will open play with UNI at the Kings Point Sports Club at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Last season the Billikens went 6-7 (0-0 A10), edging past Chicago State, Dayton, and George Mason, 4-3, each. Saint Louis' season was capped with a 4-0 sweep of Norfolk State on Mar. 11.
Scouting Washington U
Washington U is 0-1 (0-0 UAA) after falling, 4-3, to Maryville (Mo.) on Feb. 21.
After their season opener, seniors Ally Persky and Laurel Wanger, and junior Divya Sharma are 1-0 from the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 4 singles courts, respectively. Persky, paired with freshman Karen Gao, is also 1-0 on the No. 1 doubles court.
The Bears went 4-3 (0-0 UAA) last season, posting a four-match win streak from Feb. 22 to Mar. 8. Washington U notched 8-1 victories over Centre and Oberlin. The Bears posted 6-3 wins over Caltech and Chapman.

UNI edged out the Cougars, 4-3, on Feb. 3, 2019, in Waterloo. The Panthers picked up the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts from Reghan Lynch/Claudia Toledo and Olivia Fain/Daisy Phillips. Lynch, Phillips, and Caro sealed the Panthers' victory with singles wins on the No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 courts, respectively.

SIUE is 4-2 (0-0 OVC) on the season, notching three straight wins over Dayton, Western Illinois, and Illinois-Springfield before Illinois State snapped their streak with a 4-1 win on Feb. 10. The Cougars bounced back to record a 7-0 sweep of Valparaiso before falling, 4-2, to Butler on Feb. 20. SIUE will be facing Bradley on Feb. 26 prior to their meeting with UNI on Feb. 28.
Freshman Jordan Schifano leads the Cougars with a 5-0 record, primarily from the No. 2 court in singles play. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Gomez is also undefeated, going 3-0 between the No. 4 and No. 5 courts. In doubles, redshirt freshman Jill Lambrechts/Schifano and redshirt junior Callaghan Adams/redshirt freshman Caitlyn Sporing sport 3-2 records from the No. 1 and No. 3 courts, respectively.
