UNI Women's Soccer Opens Season with a 0-0 Tie

ROCKFORD, Illinois - The UNI soccer team took on Valparaiso on Wednesday afternoon, finishing in a 0-0 tie following 2 overtime periods.

A tough 110 minutes of play for UNI and Valparaiso would be an understatement. Both teams had multiple chances to win the game in regulation but stout goalkeeping forced multiple overtime periods.

There were a combined 11 shots in the first half and 8 in the second half. UNI finished with 5 shots on goal, 2 from Johnnie Hill and 1 apiece from Ashley Harrington, Lauren Heinsch and Lizzie Mewes.

Tied 0-0 headed into the first overtime the Panthers saw their best chance to put the game away when Lauren Heinsch put a shot on goal in the 96th minute. The game moved to the second overtime period when Lizzie Mewes had an oportuity to put the game away but Valparaiso goalkeeper Nikki Coryell made the save in the 102nd minute.

Valparaiso finished with 12 shot and 4 shots on goal. Caitlin Richards received the start in net for the Panthers and played all 110 minutes. Richards blocked all 4 shots on goal.

Now 0-0-1 on the season, the Panthers women's soccer team will get back in action on Sunday, February 28 when they travel to Ames, Iowa for an in-state showdown with Iowa State. The game will begin at 1 pm.
